Default 2012 Impreza 6th Gear

Has anyone noticed their impreza not wanting to go into 6th gear on its own? After having the car for about 6 months, I have noticed that it never seems to want to get into 6th gear and lower the RPM.

I took a trip last weekend which consisted of highway and state roads (50mph). I noticed that if I manually shifted my CVT into 6th gears the rpm's would drop to about 1.5k and my gas mileage improved to the point where I was getting 33 mpg on the way down.

Has anyone heard of an issue like this that others have or could be fixed with an ECU flash?

Yeah, I always have a hard time getting my manual into 6th gear too. It always makes horrible noises when I try.

1 reverse 5 forward, 6th gear maybe.

Yes i did have to use more energy to get it in there. 9k miles later either im used to it or it has gotten easier.

When you're in manual mode, these gears are simulated gears, giving you the feeling of an actual manual transmission

The CVT transmission is not a traditional automatic transmission with gears. The gear ratio actually changes as your speed changes. Therefore when your in manual mode 6th gear then switch of to D the transmission will change gear ratios for the best MPG at the speed you're driving at

In addition to what jspec rsx said:

When you're in simulated 6th gear at 50mph, you'll have a rough time accelerating or going up a hill. Try it sometime, you either won't get the performance you want from it, or the car will override you and kick down to 4th or something.

If you don't need to accelerate, then you can put it in 6th and get better fuel economy. That's what the paddles are there for.

To add more...

If you coast at 50 mph, you will see revs fall to the lowest possible RPM, around 1650 rpm by my logging. If you are on a flat road, not accelerating, and there's no headwind, RPM will stay at 1650. If you accelerate AT ALL, the CVT will downshift, and RPM will rise. You can watch the red Fuel Economy meter needle to determine if the car thinks you're accelerating or not. If the needle is to the right of mid-point, your CVT should be keeping the revs low. As noted above, in 6th manual, there's almost no acceleration possible, although it makes following on the highway easier. In auto mode, revs rise and acceleration jumps, then you have to back off the throttle.

Thanks for the responses. I do realize there is no power while in 6th gear as I have found on through the Vermont mountains. But I do notice that manually throwing it in 6th seems to yield much better cruising RPMs/gas mileage as well as coasting downhill with little to no engine breaking. I just wish the car would "automatically" seek 6th as much as possible.

I have the base model CVT, which doesn't have a manual shift mode or paddles, and I average 38mpg combined. I took a long trip last weekend and averaged 43mpg, and I was cruising in between 2k and 3k rpms. I've had mine for 8 months, however. It takes a while for the computer to adjust to your driving style.

Also, the fuel economy meter works like this: the center point represents your current average mpg, and the needle position shows if your current mpg is more or less than your current average mpg.

I put my CVT into 6th gear when cruising on the highway it helps to keep the rpms lower, saving me some gas.

How are you getting such high mileage? I wouldn't say I am spirited driver and the car only seems to get 33 on the highway.

Like I said, it depends on your driving habits and how long you have owned the car. During the first couple of months I owned it, I was probably getting around 33 highway, but after a while it kept increasing over time. My normal was about 38 highway until I installed the K&N drop-in air filter, after which it has gone up.

Also, for what it's worth, I use Mobil-1 oil and filter.
