Our 2nd run (of 2) to the top on Sunday was our quickest: For a bit of a laugh watch the "Grille with Audio Tour" video. Matt www.RockyRoadRacing.com

I saw the mount Washington video the other day. Participating in one of those hill climbs is definitely something I've got on my bucket list.

You have a co driver, is that a new thing for Mt Washington? Sprongl didn't used to have one, was that by choice?

Pretty sure he was running Rally Class if he had a codriver. Sprongl also didn't have a 34mm restrictor to hold him back. Good run! Have fun at NEFR.
edit: LOL at the audio tour! Last edited by Aceyduce; 07-02-2011 at 11:03 AM. |

I wasn't trying to discredit this run, nor compare the times. Since this is the first Mt Washington event in many years I didn't know if the entire event had changed to this format.
Was the restrictor just for the Rally Class or did everyone (including Higgens) need to run one? |

Yup, we were running in the Rally 1 class (AWD). The Rally 1 and Rally 2 (2WD) classes were new for the event this year and were the only classes allowed to have a navigator. Everyone in those classes had to have a rally license, and their cars had to meet RallyAmerica rules (i.e. 34mm restrictor for turbo cars like us).
AFAIK he didn't have one, and the cars running in the Open class this year that had turbos had to have a 40mm restrictor if their engine was 2.5L or smaller (Higgins), or 36mm if bigger than 2.5L. Thanks! Our goals were to have fun and drive the car back onto the trailer at the end of the day Sunday, both of which we did. We knew we weren't going to set the world on fire, only running on pump gas with stock WRX size tires. We'll try, though we're not running. I'm the Chief of Controls and the Stage Captain for over 80% of the stage miles. When we went up the road Saturday afternoon to check our notes on the top part of the mountain they handed us one of the packets with the CD in it and I got the idea. Matt www.RockyRoadRacing.com |

We were at the checkpoint at the cow field (7.25 on your 1st video, our ham operator had his lights on). The visibility would go from 100+ yds to <30ft about every 30 sec. as clouds would roll through. I was amazed at the skills of some of the drivers such as yourself who could keep it pegged at speed as visibility above the 5.5K ft. elevation would quickly become non-existent. Talking about flying while blind!

restrictors
Frank ran a 1990 car in 1998 with no restrictor or codriver and 2 miles of gravel. This year a brand new car ran with a 40 millimeter restrictor and an Ipod with pace notes and 1 mile of gravel. We are comparing apples and oranges. David did a great job of setting a record that may stand for a very long time. Bill Rutan held the record for 29 years and Frank Sprongl held it for 13 years. Anyone that holds this record is a hero in my book. Also only 2 people bettered the 1998 record. LOR

FYI
I added a few more videos, different angles of different runs. Check 'em out. Matt www.RockyRoadRacing.com Last edited by RRR-K2; 07-27-2011 at 09:07 PM. Reason: Changed link to direct to playlist of Mt. Washington only videos. |
