OT: My PS2's RIP and I dunno what to do!!!
OK, so about 1.5 months ago my PS2 was dead, I could not restart nor eject the CD-tray so I took it to Game Square (that store in RPM, I know I know, that place sux, even my friends said so but I bought my games there) and let them have a look, they said somethings blown and they couldn't fix it, ok, wasted a few weeks there. Then I ask my firend to recommand me a place where they'll fix it for me, he said Poptoy in good, they take your machine to some shop to fix it for you, so last week I took my PS2 there and let them have a look. I called them yesterday to see if I have any updates, they said there's no screen and they couldn't eject the CD tray (yes, that's the reason why I took it to fix). They said it might be the chip's problem (it's modded) and they can take it apart to check, so I said yes. I call them today, they said the chip aparently affected the motherboard as well, I ask them how much it is to replace the motherboard, they said it's around a $100. So now I'm starting to worry, they said they can fix my motherboard for $20 but it might not last long till it'll blow again so they suggest me to trade in my busted PS2 in EB and just get a new one but I don't want to get a slim cuz they have this design flaw in the laser that scratches your CDs. They said it cost $150 to mod (rip off...). They said I can bring it to Sony in Po-Co to fix it there but the problem is I bought my PS2 in HK and there's no warrenty but it's an U.S version so they said they can take the chip out and pretend it's the real deal. I'm so frustrated, I don't know what to do. My question is, should I trade my PS2 and get a new PS2 slim and mod it?? If so are there any places other then Poptoy that mods at a decent price and also have good chips?? Are there any places that still sells regular PS2?? Should I replace the whole motherboard instead of getting a new one?? Are there any other stores that repairs PS2?? Is my PS2 even repairable?! I'm so confused, I don't know much about PS2s, please help this young newbie, thanks.

trade it at eb for a used (fat) ps2 (if they still carry any).. they guarantee that they'll work fine- otherwise go for rc0310's devilish plan :P

did u mod it by any chance?
cuz usually modded PS2s won't last longer than 2 or 3 years.... mine is already dying out... can't load DVD games all the time.. so frustrating...~ |

mine died out last year and i bought a new one...........
my old one are still sitting in my house collecting dust and if your PS 2 is about 2-3 yrs old + modded.....a great chance that your lens won't last too long even you fixed it. It is actually better to trade in your old one for a new one.......since both will come to about $100+ or you can ask them what part is not working and get some other ppls part to repair.........so if you need any parts, let me know cos the only thing mine doesn't work is the lens.......everything inside mine still works.... Buy a new one at future shop, carefully swap over the serial number stickers and return the broken one.

I sold my PS2 and bought a new one after playing it for 2-3 years as I was expecting it to die soon... anyways I bought a White PS2 from Poptoys (GT4 Prologue Special pack) and it's the very last version of the big PS2s. Both my PS2s were modded at Poptoys and I really haven't had much problem dealing with them. I think there prices are reasonable because they do a good job at modding the machines. You always pay a price for modding a machine, but if you calculate the amount of play time that you can get out of one machine plus the cost of modding versus the price of having just a normal machine and having to pay for $70 dollar games, you save quite a bit if you buy new games very often.
I heard about the problems about the new slim PS2s too... but I don't think every machine has those problems, as my cousin is happy with his... maybe it's a bad quality control... I mean the new PS2 has been selling out everywhere. I seriously think you are probably better off getting a new slim PS2, getting it modded and avoid the trying to cheat the system part. |

When's the PS3 comming?? If it's comming like in spring 05 or sth (which I doubt) then I'll get the PS3 but if it's comming at the end of next year then I'm gonna repair it. I went to poptoy and got it back today, all they did was remove the chip and put a warrenty sticker , waste of my $20.

there aren't even pictures of PS3 right now, so the chances for it being sold by mid 05 is rare.... and when they make ps3, ps2 wil become junks~ |

PS3 has been in development since PS2 was released. PS3 would be launched around the same time as X-Box 2.

Ok, this is ultra gay!!!!
So I mentioned earlier that Poptoy charged me $20 to take out the chip and put a warrenty sticker. Last week I brought it over to Sony to see if they'll fix it, they charged me $114 (the lady on the phone said $107 when I called and asked) which is very damn expensive, well, I just got a call from Sony just minutes ago that my PS2 couldn't be fix cuz they found out I modded it, FUK!!!!!!!!!!! He said he'll charged me $40 for inspection charge and $5 to ship it back to my door. Diu!!!!!!! Spend a total of $65 for nothing!!!!! Fuk Poptoy, they said it'll work and they charged me $20, damnit I want my $20 back !!!!! I know my $20 had gone to trash and I could never get it back, the only thing I can do right now is to trade it in EB which is another $120 (I went and asked them). *sigh, conclusion, DO NOT GO TO POPTOY!!!! Thx for reading my ultra gay post.

of course sony won't fix it if its modded, they hate people who mod their ps2 because they know you aren't buying their games at all... so i suggest u just leave this wherever it is, or sell it on ebay, then go get urself a new one if you are that desperate... you are in the same situation as me because mine just died too so i am stuck with a running ps2 that can't load anything almost... oh well~

yea i think superstore and future shop still has them... why wouldn't EB has them? cuz many people wouldnt mind the size especially in canada, if the prices are lowered for the thick ones...
