Interesting. I'll have to pay attention to see if it happens with or without AC. I think it's mostly with AC on.. not recirculating.. but I'll have to make sure. Good call.

I smell it too, its problably normal. Just the unburned "chemicals" in the exhaust creeping up. Thats what the cat is suppose to kill. But nothing is perfect.
Anyways, to the people who did their own oil change: did you guys have to buy a new crush washer when you take out the drain plug? I'm gonna do it tomorrow and I would like to have somw tips :P |

with our imprezas, use your jackstand on the chassis pinches(you will thank me, as i originally did it on the suspension mounts and did it make a mess). Also, When the drain is almost done, I like to take out the jackstands to get every drop as the oil pan is very weird shaped.. Be sure to check your oil filter gasket is still on the oil filter, and not the Oil Filter Reciever.(happened to most of my subaru filters) I think thats about it.....???? |

When I used Mobil1 the people at the parts counter would just give me a crush washer if I asked. Now I use AMS-Oil which I need to buy from a dealer I know locally but is cheaper than Mobil1 and quites the beast down a bit Subaru's are so loud when they're cold! But, I'd just buy a pack of washers and replace it every other oil change, you could probably go 10+ oil changes but better safe than sorry.
Edit: forget the jack-stands, I borrow a buddies lift |

Lol, thanks. my friend said he would lift it from a center point, would that be bad? i've never used a center point before and what if i didn't use a crush washer, would that be bad too? my friend was saying that wouldn't really be necessary. but he owns a 240 and civic sooo but thanks for the info ill just use the same crush washer and buy more some other time
haha, yeah i bought mobil1 5w-30 with a k&n oil filter. anyone use 0w-30? i saw it at walmart and i wasn't sure if we could use it. they say on the container that it covers the warranty protection with 5w-30 and i think 10w-30? |

I used to buy k&n or bosch or mobil oil filters because I thought I was getting a better filter than a fram for the price. I did a little research and ended up finding out about subaru's high bypass spec (22 or 23 psi... can't remember right now). Most filters that you'll find at the auto parts store have a bypass pressure between 7 and 12 psi. Basically that means that if these filters clog for any reason, they'll let the unfiltered oil back into the engine sooner than a subaru filter would. The easiest way to meet that spec that I've found is just to buy the blue subaru filters. The dealer near me sells me a 12 pack at $5-6 a unit. (they fit the wife's forester as well, so I go through them faster than you'd think)

Good that it sounds like that smell when pushing engine hard/ revving it out, is normal.
It makes sense that it's blowing stuff out of the cats/ exhaust as it didn't happen when car was bran new, but with 3 years- 26.5k miles under it's belt, there's probably plenty of built up stuff in the exhaust. I don't think anything is wrong with car- it run perfectly otherwise. |

What mileage? Condition? Service history? I wouldn't blindly say yes! It might be a horrible thing to do. Might be great deal... Not enough info!

+1000
I usually change my oil in the evening after work. The problem is I always burn my hands on the hot exhaust and hot oil. I finally wised up and started leaving the hood up when I got home. It lets the heat out A LOT quicker. And just for the sake of argument, what is this center jack point you speak of? Anyone have pic? |
