November 2, 2021 , Camden, N.J. -

SUBARU OF AMERICA, INC. REPORTS OCTOBER SALES

Subaru of America, Inc. today reported 36,817 vehicle sales for October 2021, a 40 percent decrease compared with record October 2020 (61,411) as Subaru continues to face supply chain shortages. The automaker also reported year-to-date sales of 499,619, a 0.3 percent gain compared with the same period in 2020.

“Subaru, like the rest of the auto industry, faces a severe shortage of semi-conductor chips and other key components, that directly impacts our vehicle production. We are working tirelessly, alongside our retailers, to get customers the vehicles they want and need as quickly as possible,” said Thomas J. Doll, President and CEO, Subaru of America, Inc. “In October, our Subaru retailer network exemplified what it means to be More Than a Retailer, through strong sales efficiency, as well as through outstanding customer experience for all those who choose our products.”

In October, Crosstrek was the top performer by volume with 10,591 vehicle sales. WRX/STI sales for October 2021 increased 35 percent over the same month in 2020. Year-to-date (YTD), Forester leads by volume with total sales of 137,074 vehicles. When compared with the same period in 2020, Outback posted a nearly seven (7) percent increase YTD, while Crosstrek and WRX/STI carlines posted YTD increases of 22 percent and 37 percent, respectively.

“Our retailers showcased record efficiency in October, proving the demand for the unmatched quality of Subaru vehicles. We’re looking forward to production improving over the next several months,” said Jeff Walters, Senior Vice President of Sales. “We’re proud of what our retailers have been able to accomplish as we continue to combat challenges from the global supply chain disruptions.”

Last month, Subaru was ranked highest in Overall Quality, Vehicle Safety and Dependability in the 2021 American Customer Satisfaction Index Survey (ACSI) Automobile Study. The study, which ranks automobile brand performance, found Subaru continues to be number one for vehicle safety among mass-market vehicles for a second consecutive year. This distinction is based on customers’ ratings of the performance of their own automobiles. Subaru customers rated the quality, safety and dependability of the brand the highest out of any brand in the automobile industry. In the ACSI 2020-2021 Automotive Study, Subaru was rated as following:

#1 Brand for Quality in the automotive industry
#1 Brand for Dependability in the automotive industry
#1 Brand for Safety in the automotive industry

First a horrible WRX launch, and now this? Only up .3% from last year and on track to be WAY under 2020 numbers due to the shortages while all the other manufacturers are UP from last year?

Heads need to roll for this ****...

Who's head? The suppliers for having COVID issues and having to shut down for a prolonged period of time? SOA set a sales efficiency record last month of over 500%. It's possible they'll end the year down. That'll come down to can the factories ramp up enough. So, again, who's head needs to roll?

LOL, sweet click bait. The inventory is low, there are supply issues.... Despite that, Ill bet Subaru still completely obliterated much bigger brands, like VW. I can't wait for the WRX official launch!

Holy WRX/STI sales, that is amazing. Great job with their performance models.

If it because of the chip shortage, they must have made the decision to give Crosstrek priority. Maybe the profit margin is higher.

They could be allocating those chips for the 2.5L Crosstreks. I'm sure that engine option has stimulated sales.

You're really gonna have to elaborate how Subaru is "handling" the shortages worst than any manufacturer. They'd make double the cars if they were able. They are not able because of supplier issues. But, you're right. They are selling every one that comes in and their just "aren't any to sell". But, they started the month with a little over 6000 units on the ground and will likely sell over 30,000 this month. Similar to last month. I personally think they are handling their shortages great considering.

These numbers are really bad, especially when you compare them to other manufacturers who are dealing with the same chip shortages. Mazda for example, a small manufacturer, is only down 14%. Hyundai is barely down at all. Toyota North America is down 28%, but they sell way more cars, so I would expect the chip shortage to hurt them more than subaru.

Keep in mind the more “just in time” a company’s just in time inventory is for their parts, the more this chip shortage affects them. Judging by how low their car inventory is under normal circumstances, I’m thinking it’s likely the cause.

Who knows, Toyota could be mitigating their drop a bit by siphoning some chips from Subaru seeing as they do have a good stake in them... that would exacerbate their shortage too.

Subaru screwed up because like most automobile manufacturers they panicked when the pandemic started and cancelled their microchip orders. The chip manufacturers then replaced those orders with massive orders from other sectors like home electronics that surged during the pandemic. Then when auto manufactures realized they needed loads of chips suddenly they were sent to the back of the line.

There are other factors at play (massive drought in Taiwan where a large percentage of chips are made and chips require lots of water to produce, major fire in a Japanese supplier, etc).

But cancelling their orders was the big driver for the shortages.

Source of them canceling their chip orders? Yeah, their current chip issue is because "other factors" in that THEIR supplier shut down for a couple/few weeks. Had they had a different supplier, like other manufacturers, things would likely be different. I'm just hoping they look into a contract with another, or 2nd, supplier. You know, eggs in a basket thing.

This is why Hyundai is barely down. They didn’t cancel their orders. It was just a knee jerk short sighted reaction by most automotive manufacturers.

And yes lots of other factors like I mentioned but you wouldn’t see these huge declines had Subaru kept their orders like Hyundai.

Hyundai also barely shut down. The downside was they had vehicles piling up being stocked at ports and ships. Not sure how that impacted their bottom line financially but it could have been a gamble that paid off as they are not behind on inventory. They probably paid normal prices for said chips.

This article says nothing specific about Subaru cancelling orders. During the pandemic, the northern states all shut down while the southern states did not. Sales dropped, but not equal to other manufacturers due to buyers just heading south for their cars. Subaru has been mostly able to keep sales going until the shutdown. Subaru talks to it's retailers all the time about this and were always talking about how they were/are trying to secure more parts and the lengths they go to get the parts to the factory. After retailers started opening back up, sales started going back up and just like in the past, were selling cars faster than Subaru could make them; because they couldn't/can't secure parts fast enough. That shutdown really hurt and last month was the first month to truly show it.

The only "canceling" of orders I could see would be just not ordering when they had to shut down Gunma for an outbreak.

*puts on Fanboi cap* To be fair, apples to apples, Subaru's vehicles have power right in line with their competition. It can be tough to compare other AWD, anemic CUVs for under $30k, but they're there.

The other stuff on the list, fairly subjective to varying degrees.

Subaru sells too many at a rapid pace and struggles to recuperate. Maybe it's better to sell fewer at a slower pace, but higher pricing?

I mean this isn’t rocket science. Look at Subarus sales numbers. Down last year and down this year. They specifically site lack of microchips. The companies that didn’t cancel orders did not see the big drop.

You can’t seem to be able to see the forest through the trees.

I think growing demand for body on frame trucks and SUVs is taking away from sales.

Back then Subaru's were the go to for off road capable vehicles with decent gas mileage.

The MPG on SUVs and Trucks have improved enough to shift buyers.

When it comes to decent off road crossovers, there are good amount of choices from all manufacturers.
