Yea, stock the turbo can feel a bit abrupt. Comes on fast and dies out. A lot of fun if you have never driven a sporty car. I have huge sway bars and suspension done on my car and then had to drive my sisters Hyundai Elantra last week. Almost crashed when I tried to go around a corner because the front end washed out so bad. Same type of thing. You just get used to what you have.

548whp in a FULLY built STi changed my life as well.

It's a relatively large OEM single scroll turbo; therefore, it will have a bit of lag. You'll feel a decently strong surge of power as the turbo achieves peak boost.

Many will say things like the WRX turbo "it dies off in the upper rpms", but that's really not true. The motor is still making 95% of peak power at fuel cut. What happens is their mind is expecting the constant surge of power (acceleration g's) initally felt when the turbo spools up. Once spooled, the big surge is done and then you just ride relatively wide powerband that isn't peaky. There isn't a huge change in peak power between 5000rpms and 6500rpms therefore the acceleration g's aren't going to feel like they're building up. That's the nature of a well designed turbo setup. It has a wide powerband and flat torque curve spread out over a lot of rpm. It's basically like a well tuned V8 powerband, much like GM's LS series motors. When the LS V8 came out in 97, people said it didn't feel remotely as powerful as the LT1 it replaced. However, when dynoed, the LS made a lot more power. The difference was the power was delivered early, sustained longer, and wasn't as peaky.

The sensation of speed in the WRX is somewhat deadened because there is no peakiness compared to that of most naturally aspirated (NA) motors, especially smaller displacement motors. NA motors make power through displacement and rpm.

The key to true acceleration potential is power under the curve and this is where turbos excel. Overlay a turbo dyno plot over an NA dyno plot and you'll see what I'm talking about. The turbo's torque curve arrives much sooner and is substanially higher and wider across the powerband rpm range. The turbo might not achieve as much peak HP as a high winding NA motor, but it's HP curve is much broader; therefore, more average power is being created and more acceleration available.

A peak power advantage of even 20hp from 6000-6500rpms will not make your car mearsurablly faster; however, elevating the entire powerband 20whp at all points like make the car decently quicker. Reason being you spend much more time accelerating in the mid range than you do in the last 500rpms of the powerband.

Your math is off. 09+ GR WRX's make basically the same power (within 5whp) as the GR STI while moving a car that's about 200lbs lighter. The 09+ GR WRX is underrated and make more than the advertized 265hp (more like 290hp) and especially it's 244 lb/ft rating (more like 280tq).

Even using quoted numbers from Subaru:

2011 WRX 3,205lb (265hp) = 12:1
2011 WRX STI 3,405lb (300hp) = 11.35:1

The 08-10 WRX's aren't GR's. Its a GH. At least in the case of the hatchback. 09+ WRX's were rated for 265bhp, not 250. And the transmission has to factor in...

kinda felt the same way when i first drove an 03 EVO back when they came to the states. starts out like your typical economy car with no torque and then all of a sudden when boost hits warp speed

I thought my WRX had pull until a friend at work took me for a ride in his Mustang... twin turbo supercharged Shelby tuned by Gearheads pushing over 700hp

It was a very humbling experience.

I went through the same. Bought my car 100% stock. ZOMG this thing is quick! Two weeks later, meh. Went stage 2, same thing. Went E85, same thing, but every now and then I'll run through the gears and look at the speedo and be like "damn, I was just doing 30mph in second a few moments ago". Or a few weeks ago when I had 2 of my friends with me and they wanted me to rip through the gears really quick (I shift like a madman on occasion). Spun first to the rev limiter, Chirped second, and chirped THIRD. Couldn't believe it, we all had stupid grins on our faces. Once the 20g goes on (or possibly a green) I'm done. Then it's coilovers. Blah blah. I could type for ages .

Then I rode in a Mustang on slicks.

Hell even decent drag radials can launch dead even with the an "ok" subie launch. (around a 1.8 60ft)

stock 11wrx feels alright, power curve isn't that smooth
stage 1 made it felt smoother and boost seemed to last longer
stage 2 was a kick in the nuts

I went from an a4 to a stage 2 sti.. The power gave me an instant chub and was almost to much for me to control, a few months later I feel like I'm back in my audi... Almost. you'll get used to it.. And if your like me you'll want more

My brother's tuned Ford F-250 6.0L V8 Powerstroke Diesel pulls pretty damn hard off the line. 800ft-lbs of torque will do that... That was my first experience with any vehicle that really pushes you back in your seat.

anything will always feel faster as a passenger though.

My Yamaha Apex sled will hit 60 in 3.5 on hardpack. That thing is one torquey SOB. Still times that you wish it were faster though.

It's all relative. You'll always get use to the power. I've had faster cars in the past and it's a viscous and EXPENSIVE cycle full of compromise and frustration dealing with ill-fitting aftermarket parts and trying to be the fastest on the strip/street. I now could care less if the 2012 Mustang 5.0 next to me at the light would run away from me above 70mph.

Over the years, I've learned:

1) 13 and 14 second cars are MORE than enough for the street and is faster than 99% of the cars of the street.

3) It's plenty of speed to have lots of fun in the auto-x

4) It's power you can use and is point/shoot in nature. You really can't stretch the legs of a 11/12 second car on the street for risk of getting a major ticket.

5) I get much more joy out of improving handling, braking, creature comforts, and styling than I do with power. All out power is short lived and can rarely be used.

6) Having that "sleeper" huge HP car is a dream for many, but in the end it's boring because most of the time it looks just like every other verison of its self and you're the only one that knows it's extremely fast. It's much more enjoyable to drive something that turns heads but may be "slow".

Learn to ride a motorcycle, ride a 1000cc sport bike. I will never own one because it would ruin any sort of cars acceleration. Everything would feel slow.

If you wanna keep that feeling and spend thousands in upgrades and repairs. Have a really slow daily driver. I drive my wife's Mini Cooper most of the time I drive a car so stage 2 still feels good and exciting 3 years later.
