I think you'd have people at the stealer literally fist fighting to get an allocation. Subaru and all their reliability issues, and recalls, etc, and people would still be lining up. For a company that talks about customer loyalty etc, you need to make one vehicle to make up for LGT wagons, STi hatches, WRX hatches, give us one g damn option!

That doesn't surprise me. The Corolla is the largest selling vehicle in the world, from the world's largest automaker. It darn well should be an excellent car.

Sleek new wagon coming to Oz; Japan-spec models revealed with 1.8-litre turbo-petrol engine

Japanese media have begun test drives of the new-generation Subaru Levorg powered by a new 130kW/300Nm 1.8-litre turbo-petrol boxer engine.

The fancy Impreza-based wagon has been confirmed for Australia and is tipped to arrive here in the second-half 2021.

But it’s not yet clear whether the Subaru Levorg will be offered here with the same new downsized flat-four and CVT automatic transmission as the Japanese domestic market version.

Boasting a fresh new look that hints at the designs of the upcoming Subaru WRX and WRX STI, which will be revealed in 2021 and 2022 respectively, the new Subaru Levorg also gets adaptive suspension and a next-gen EyeSight X driver-assist system that uses loads of radar sensors and cameras to keep the car on the road.

The car’s new adaptive cruise control offers hands-free driving in traffic jams and will also change lanes and even slow the vehicle for tollgates and corners using sat-nav input.

There’s also a high-tech interior fit-out with a large 11.6-inch vertical (portrait-style) touch-screen infotainment system, a fancy 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a digital interior mirror.



All these high-end features will also work their way into the next Subaru WRX and WRX STI, but it remains to be seen whether the equipment sharing will flow both ways and whether a high-end Levorg will get the tricked-up circa-200kW powerplant expected in the Subaru WRX.

Only the 130kW 1.8-litre turbo boxer engine has been announced in Japan at this stage.

Subaru Australia released an official statement today, confirming: “Australia will get next-generation Levorg” but that “specification, including engines and timing, will be considerably different to that in the Japan domestic market, which is launching later this year.”

2022 Subaru WRX STI to be most powerful ever

The 1.8-litre turbo-boxer may not get a guernsey in Australia, which means another potentially juicier engine will have to slot in.

The current Subaru Levorg wagon range spans four models and is priced from $37,240 for the 1.6-litre turbo GT (125kW/250Nm) and tops out at $53,240 for the 2.0-litre turbo (197kW/350Nm) STI Sport. The latter gets the same engine as the current WRX but only automatic CVTs are offered with the Levorg.

Subaru Australia said it was “…too early to provide fine detail, but we’ve clearly demonstrated the niche market for this performance wagon and it’s one we will develop and explore, but in a slightly different direction, which we believe will appeal to an even greater customer base.”



The cryptic comments suggest Subaru Australia will take the Levorg in a different direction and possibly only offer high-end, high-performance (and high-profit) models.

Small wagons are a rarity in Australia, with only the Subaru Levorg, Volkswagen Golf and Skoda Octavia offering wagon variants here. The Toyota Corolla wagon is under consideration for Australia but unlikely to materialise in the short-term.

The new Subaru Levorg rides on the brand’s new(ish) global platform architecture which allows for hybrid powertrains and also sees the Japanese wagon grow slightly, measuring 4755mm long or 65mm longer. Width and height are unchanged at 1780mm and 1500mm respectively.

New Subaru BRZ coming 2021

The wheelbase (distance between front and rear axles) has increased by 20mm to 2670mm, which should create more room for its five passengers, and boot space has increased from 489 to 561 litres. The tailgate also features hands-free power operation.

Subaru Australia has stated that it will “communicate detail and timing on what promises to be an exciting next-generation model at the earliest opportunity”.

At present two versions of the new wagon are offered in Japan: the Levorg and Levorg STI Sport.

It's ugly, I'll take it! With an STI drivetrain pls. still significantly less cargo capacity than my 2006 wagon had, but significantly better than the sedan.

Ugly is part of what makes a Subaru a Subaru.

It's ugly but it kind of goes back to Subaru's roots of making quirky, strange looking vehicles. Most of their lineup today is pretty bland and anonymous in comparison.

What wagon did you have in 2006?
Because the 06 WRX wagon had 166L less cargo space than this new Levorg. And a 06 Legacy had 102L less than this new Levorg.

I personally don't find it ugly at all, it's has better proportions than the old Levorg and the design looks fresh and unique.
But ugly or pretty is just a personal thing.

He owned an 06 WRX Wagon like mine (I sold mine too).
I'd also think Levorg had more cargo capacity than our old 06 WRX wagons.

I saw a Tribeca on the way to work today and that was probably the weirdest/quirkiest Subaru I've seen in awhile.

I like the current design language but I do agree that it looks...almost like any other automaker. Everything now is angular and aggressive and has LED running lights which look cool as hell, but EVERYONE has them. Honda Civics used to look like true econoboxes. Now even a base model Civic looks quite muscular with the big fender arches and prominent hood lines.

I really like the Levorg but then again I love hatches and wagons, which can't be said of most Americans. I do think that segment needs a lot of love and I'm glad Subaru is still catering to it. Now if only we can get this thing stateside...

yep, 2006 wrx limited wagon 5mt; I also assumed the Levorg would have more cargo capacity than my wagon did.

Press release for the Levorg says 561 litres, which in freedom units is 19.8 cuft.
Everything I come across for the 06 says 27.9 cuft with the seats up (converted that would be 790 liters).

Either the press release is wrong, my conversion is wrong, the internet is lying about the 06 cargo capacity, or the Levorg hatch area is compromised by the sloping roof & raised back-end coupled with the rear passenger seats.

I'm guessing/assuming, it's 561L without including the volume above the top of the rear seats (I know that's how it's done in Europe, so maybe the same in Australia?).

Well, CB18DIT is the most undersquare engine Subaru has ever produced to date !
80.6 mm bore and 88 mm stroke (splitting the difference between FA20/FA24 and FB20/FB25 stroke).
Maybe Subaru engineers have finally understood what they needed to do to get a turbo engine that runs well on pump gas (with improved fuel economy too).

I would, but only with a manual. doesn't even need to be an "sti". Give me it in wrx trim.

But if it's going to be auto (CVT), hard pass. If I'm accepting an automatic, there are other things on the market I'd prefer. Used BMW 330i xdrive, audi sq5, etc. would all be higher on my list than another CVT powered Subaru.

Will be back in the market for a sporty wagon again in a few years - likely would accept a "sporty" CUV too. Probably would prefer EV if there's a good awd option available, but if not, I'll settle for another ICE.

IMO, it depends on whether or not Subaru intended BC18DIT as a simple FB25 replacement.
But, unless they used toothpicks instead of proper rods, that engine should be able to match FA20DIT blow for blow while being more tolerant on less than perfect 93 AKI gas.
But, then again, FA24DIT makes 260-hp on 87; so, maybe it's the path of least resistance even if it will never match the fuel efficiency or knock resistance of the 1.8L long stroker.

That'd be a nice engine; should rev decently well too despite the +2mm stroke compared to FA20.
For sure, it should rev WAY better than EZ36 ever could. Would be a nice N/A 250-hp for a BRZ...
