So I'd say, since I was in my early 20s I've always been in a gear when the car is moving. Obviously when you drop under about 15 you don't really have a choice, but then the selector is in second with the clutch pedal pushed in, ready to drop the clutch, should I need to scoot.

But hey, if you drive a manual, do it however you want.

This is akin to the discussion that's come up to justify Subaru being the only brand not to include emergency braking on their manuals. it might stall and then you couldn't get out of the way of an incoming car after it just saved you from smashing into something. Gotta make sure we have access to that throttle! Let's just hope the first crash didn't kill you.

I've been driving manuals for 17 years now. I still coast or brake in neutral if I know I'm stopping for a stop sign or a red light that I know will not change any time soon. I feel like that saves the clutch at the expense of brake pads. Pads are easier to change than the clutch.

17 years of doing it wrong. Coasting in gear, aka engine breaking, creates a vacumm condition in your engine which is a GOOD thing. Not sure how you figure this wears out your clutch but I'd go for engine health above all.

Not necessarily.

I’ve had them fail for other reasons… there’s more to fail than just the clutch’s friction pads.

I mean, sure you can shift like you're in the F&F movie franchise.

and you'll probably break a load damper spring, or any other conceivable point of failure.

and I'm not talking about slipping the clutch to a point where it cooks and you chemically alter the state of the friction material so it no longer provides the level of friction necessary.

I'm just talking about good old fashioned wearing the thing out before it's time, resting your foot on the clutch pedal while in gear, not having the clutch fully engaged before accelerating, riding the clutch on a hill to keep from rolling backwards.

and maybe you consider failure to be a non wear related failure, but I do consider decreasing the life of a wear part by tens of thousands of miles to be a premature failure. so maybe we are just defining failure differently.

The second I hear someone feather the gas pedal as they let the clutch out I lose all respect. It's not hard to give the rest amount of throttle at the friction point.

Dunno folks. WRX had a 89% MoM increase in November. A year now of bitchin and moanin and looks like people are still seeing the WRX for what it's always been. A fun, decently practical(yes, no hatch) and priced car.


Now to go out and check out the first overpriced GT we've gotten that I can drive.

As I said earlier, a handful of opinions in this thread from people that haven't even driven this car is a poor reflection of reality. Entertaining ? Oh for sure, but a far cry from the real world. This is a great car and by far the best WRX made to date. Good to see they are selling well but not surprising at all.

Maybe its because Subaru has more of them in inventory to actually sell than the GTI, Golf R, Civic Si, Civic Type-R, Elantra N, Kona N, Mazda3 Turbo, GR86, GR Corolla, and BRZ combined?

I can walk in and get a WRX under MSRP, unlike any other of its competitors.
