Still waiting on Samagon to catagorize it since he's the expert on body styles.

Subaru says the current Impreza 5-door is a wagon, so I guess I'm content and also understand why Subaru is confused about everyone crying for a wagon when they already offer one.

I believe that designation is from the epa. My 09 wrx hatch was also classified as a wagon.

Everyone rejoice! "Impreza Wagon" is EPA-approved!

Did you see the SubaruMotorSportsUSA IG question about "is a hatch a wagon?" I wonder if they are reading these threads lol.

Mind blown…

Now, if we put on our Inspector hats, the press release does not say it was cancelled, merely that it would not be produced on the VB chassis. So, we don’t know if anything was ever green-lit/started and then cancelled, or if they intend to borrow another platform (which I doubt).

“In the meantime, a next generation internal combustion engine WRX STI will not be produced based upon the new WRX platform.”

Sure wish that would have been available here. A good bit more cargo space.
I would say by the definition of the rear glass opening with the rear deck lid that it falls into the hatchback category. also, I can't find a photo of this with that rear lid open, so I can only presume that it opened into the entire cabin area, and not just a trunk opening, that it fits that denotative definition as well.

if Subaru called it a sedan then I'll call it a sedan, it's how they want it to be defined. it really only goes to prove my point that it really is all down to what the marketing team want to call it vs whatever category it fills as per some definition (either connotative, or denotative).

another fun thought experiment.

there isn't a sub forum in the technical area for the FA 2.4 turbo, so the people who bought it need to have somewhere to discuss how strong the rods are.

Yeah. I have never seemed to find a pic of it opened. But, seems, like you said, that the whole thing opens up. I have no doubt the rear glass is the same as the "shorter version".

Now, to your other point, think of this. 2008. Subaru brings us what we call a "hatch"(shorter than the wagon). Internally, we find they call it a wagon still; but, marketing pushed for "5 Door".

absolutely correct.

that's why I always kind of laugh when people start pulling out measuring tapes and protractors to show why something is a wagon, or a hatchback, or a liftback using some complicated method of angles, or whatever.

it's so freakishly simple, and maybe that's the problem, people want to make it more complex so it seems less made up by random marketing teams that have a singular goal of making a car sound more appealing to the buyer.

It can be called whatever anyone wants. It's all semantics. I don't care about the dimensions or any of that, I'm concerned about the overall shape and style of it. The CTR is not styled like a hatchback. It's styled like a sedan with an over-inflated trunk.

I prefer european car styles. Always have. Pains me to see such beautiful cars produced yet not brought to one of the largest car markets, all because of some dbags suits. Thankfully a few still exit, like the Golf R and now the GRCorolla. And a few out of my reach like the RS6 avant.

RS6 Avant is the only Euro vehicle I've ever desired.

Although currently I'm in Florida driving a 330i and I think I'm slowly being converted to Euro vehicles... I must finally be showing my age as I approach 40.

6th gen (F3X) 3-series wagon almost got me, but there wasn't a 340i/M340i 6mt version of it available in the states. Almost went for a 340i 6mt sedan, but it just didn't do it for me, and I could only find them in boring colors (white, black, silver & gray).
Also the Giulia Quadrifoglio, but again, no MT in the states, so pass.
