Default General Thoughts on First Oil Change?

Is there any general consensus on changing the oil after say the first 1000 miles on these motors? I'm a little over half way there on my new 19' WRX. Dealer of course says "follow manual, and change it at 6K". Haven't found really any hard evidence pointing for or against dragging it out to the full 6K, but it's not like I don't have a stash of 5w30 in the basement...

I personally changed it shortly after 1K miles, as that's what all my local shops and tuners recommended. Some people do, some people don't. I think you will find a large amount of people here who did do it, though.

No consensus or hard evidence. Lots of differing opinions, that's all. Bluesubie recommends leaving it in awhile, there have been some UOAs showing different properties of the factory fill pointing to maybe it having some break in additives. He's probably the most versed regular poster left when it comes to oil and I trust his advice. That's about the extent of the hard evidence. You can find some UOAs on the factory fill here

I feel this topic is debated as much as "which oil is best for the car". IMO its totally up to you. I think changing the oil at 1,000 miles is silly. I changed my factory fill at 4400 miles. Ive since done oil analysis's every 10K, i have 42K miles now and my reports find my engine is wearing very nicely.

Change every 4k and call it a day. Your car is brand spanking new... it'll be fine

Thanks. I pretty much planned to do the same with UOAs. Used to do them all the time on my old Roadmaster trying to hunt down the best wearing oil in that car.

I changed mine at 1500mi, after what I consider to be a proper engine breaking period (1000-1500mi) and i dont think there is anything "silly" about breaking in an engine. I also went stage 2 at same time. Then at 5000 and there will be one around every 5k thereafter.

I never said anything about the engine break-in process. Just about changing the oil so early for the first time.

You never did say it. So do you believe in running your break in particles all over your engine for another 3000mi just for fun? Or do you not consider it properly broken in until 5000mi?

Lol let's just agree to disagree here. As previously said, this is as debated as "what is the best oil to use". I've done this on every car I've ever owned and have had zero ill effects. You don't like? Don't do it.

I don't do it, never had any ill effects either.

Do you just do things when the seventh moon is in Orion or is there a reason, because sometimes I get to learn new stuff. Or are we just disagreeing? I don't think this is nearly as debated as which oil is best.

I don't have any data that suggests keeping the factory oil longer is better or worse. This is just my personal expirience.

First car had a k20 and kept the factory oil until 5k. Had the car for 3 years and i was not nice on the car ever. Never burned oil and was very strong. 2nd car is a s2000. Same story with that one, except I still own the s2k. It has 64k miles now, doesn't burn a drop of oil even when I went 7k miles on an oil change years back. Engine is very strong and analysis suggest that it is wearing very nice. Didn't change anything with my now wrx and it is also wearing nicely at 42k miles. I've owned other cars but these are the only ones worth mentioning. It's worth mentioning that in all 3 cars I went straight to Mobil 1 synthetic and oen filters.

I do have some irrational thought that the factory oil is better to keep in engine for longer than a 1000 miles As It might help break things in But that may not be and likely isn't the case. However, since my methods have treated me well through the last 15 years I'll continue to follow this.

some people don't care and leave it in.
It's break in oil, so at 1000 miles it will be full of junk.

if that bothers you drain it and replace new. some guys don't care and leave it in.
The only thing that is not debateable is that you CANNOT do harm by changing it early, so if it's on your mind just change it.

Kept mine till 3000 miles.
I usually do a progressive break in procedure.
0-1000 miles, normal driving, no full throttle, or redlining.
1000-2000 miles, full throttle, engine braking, but still no redlining.
2000-3000 miles, full throttle, engine braking, and redlining.
Change at 3000 miles.

Left mine for the first 5,000 miles. Did that in less than a month so it was tough to find a time to change in the first month prior to the 5,000 miles.

Car now sits at just over 80,000 miles and no problems to report. Car has pretty much fbo. Haven't been on the stock tune since about 6,000 miles.

If I hadn't been accumulating miles so quickly in the beginning, I probably would have done an oil change at the 2,000 - 3,000 mile point.

I don't think you're going to hurt anything by doing the first oil change early, but I also don't seem to have any issues having waited till the 5,000 mile mark. All comes down to personal preference, imo.

simple really
if you buy the car from the factory: follow procedure as per factory
if you buy a built motor: follow procedure as per builder

Exactly. If it didn't, that means it wasn't picking up and isolating grit and other stuff that damages an engine, and thus not protecting the engine.

It's when there's too much stuff held in suspension for the oil to continue to lubricate that issues arise.

Black oil means it's functioning oil that is protecting and lubricating the engine.

I did mine at 1000 miles as well. I don't know if it's necessary or advantageous, but it was easy enough to do.

My thoughts exactly.

I use Mobil 1 FS European Formula 0W40.

My dealership gave me a coupon for a free oil change at 3k miles. I considered changing at 1k but after reading multiple recommendations to keep the factory fill in longer I will just wait til 3k and get my free change then.

It definitely cant hurt the car to change at 1k but I think the point here is that it's really not necessary for long term engine health.
