CA State Ref Questions
Looking for personal experience with people that have been reffed. With this new car profiling, in the event that I ever get sent to the ref, Im curious of the following:
1) Will the Ref tech discover a higher flowing OEM subaru injector in my car? ex: Denso 565cc dark blues in 04 wrx which has light blue injectors. 2) Can a turbo be compliant if its from another factory subaru? ex: VF48 installed vs TD04. Thanks and may the force be with us!

I had to go to the state ref in 2015 for a modified exhaust ticket. I had them test my stock STi exhaust to prove it was under the legal noise limit. This was the Santa barbara state ref.
Now, FWIW, I had put on my stock DP and stock cat-back exhaust before going to the ref. The only other modifications I had on my car are Perrin Silicone hoses. Turbo inlet, TMIC to Throttle body hose, and TMIC Y-Pipe. All visible, bright blue, and branded with Perrin. No issues with those. I also had a cobb heat shield installed, no issues there. Blitz Turbo timer with very obvious vacuum line running into it, again, no issue with that. I was currently tuned to Cobb Stage 1 when they tested my car. No issue. What they didn't like on my car were the "bulging" radiator hoses that needed to be replaced. I highly doubt the state ref will know the visual difference between turbo's or the different color of injectors, but I'm sure every ref has a different set of knowledge. |

Do you have to fork the 1000$ BEFORE the meet with state ref or only if found guilty/noncompliant?

went in a few years back with a vf30, jdm bpv, sti tmic, early grimmspeed cross pipe, sti up pipe, Sti exhaust. As well a lot of under the hood shiny stuff and powder coated items. I was actually getting compliments on my car from the state ref guys. It was funny when i first pulled the car in he said ok tell me the truth why did you get the ref ticket? Told him just enough to let him know i was busted for a reason. I was in and out. I never got the exhaust ticket. I think it was my ppg straight cut gears that caused the ticket really. Stupid part was the cop grabbed the oil cap asking what it was, lol.

Is it true, that with the new amendment to CA exhaust law the state ref may fail you as well because any sort of deviation from the standard spec OEM parts will cause a failure on a "visual inspection." Essentially, even if you bolt up a muffler delete because the piping from the axle back is not from manufacturer it can fail and you can be fined?
