Moves like this are confusing to me. As a brand Subaru is moving more and more away from enthusiast stuff and being more focused on jacked up family haulers. That's a bummer to me, but as a business case makes perfect sense.

Why waste any time or money on this bastardization of a sub-brand? Every penny they spend on some dumb pseudo-peformance STe, is a penny that could be spent on making their core cars better.

Let's just assume they create a car that is as quick as a Model 3 Performance, I doubt they are going to be much cheaper, so why buy the Subaru? AWD is nothing special in electric cars, Subaru interiors aren't any better especially since they copied the same big dumb screen that Tesla started. Lord knows Subaru is not known for designing good looking cars. I just don't know what the driving force is behind a "performance" labeled EV from this company.

Now if STe is a hybrid like the Corvette ERay is, where the battery exists only performance, and the car comes with a manual, I'll take it all back.

You don't realize that what they learn in all of their endeavors is knowledge learned and trickled into all their cars?

This is an odd departure from the STI E-RA that has already been shown.

I can't help but wonder if maybe this "STe" think is more geared towards higher performing hybrid cars, rather than a performance based electric. The styling of the STe logo is pretty boring, definitely doesn't scream "performance" to me.

Sadly, I haven't seen anything about the E-RA concept actually hitting a track. All talk, no action.

Why do you say a departure?

The E-RA (Electric-Record Attempt) is a one-off car, based on E-GT series specs, that will probably only lap Suzuka for testing. It uses Yamaha motors, not Subaru in-house stuff. If we are lucky they will enter E-GT (if they ever actually race).

STe logo, while a terrible sounding name Ess-Tee-ee, uses a similar simplified font as the official STI company. STI (WRC style outline) is used on cars.

The car buzz article also mentions that this does not indicate any form of hybrid instead straight to EV.

“ We believe the STe nomenclature will be applied to fully electric cars and not plug-in hybrids for two reasons. If it were a plug-in hybrid based around the famous turbocharged 2.5-liter flat-four or even the 2.0-liter DIT flat-four, Subaru would have kept the famous STI designation. Finally, Subaru is on record stating that an all-new STI would not make sense because. By the time it would have hit the market, it would have had an extremely short shelf life due to strict emissions legislation in the USA and Europe.
While Toyota currently builds Subaru's one and only EV, Subaru will build a dedicated EV factory next to its existing Oizumi plant. This indicates a clear move over to electrification, at least in Japan, where there is sufficient demand.”

Yes, according to the STI press release, there will not be an STI on the VB WRX chassis. I guess, technically that doesn't speak to the STe, but I believe the spirit is that the next top-of-the-line sports sedan from Subaru will be on a next-gen, probably skateboard (a la e-TNGA/eSGP) platform.

No hybrids are coming. They really don't make sense with a manual.

Um. I do. There's a reason there's a waiting list for the Chevy Bolt right now.

Also, "fascism." I don't think that word means what you think it means.

wtf is this political BS

On topic....I couldnt possibly be less excited about anything new subaru makes anymore

Once they started putting open diffs in the rear of the WRX and using plastic intake manifolds I was very underwhelmed with their vehicle lineup (2008?). Then they switched to ELH from the factory (2015?) and ruined one of the coolest parts about the car, the unique rumble. Subarus used to sound like baby big-block V8s, now theyre just like any other honda, but heavier.

I know it pissed a lot of people off, but I used to hear LOUD straight piped subarus all the time, could tell a subaru from any other car from a mile away. Nowadays I rarely hear good sounding cars, certainly not subarus, maybe the occasional Z with a str8 piped VQ or ****box mustang with a nice exhaust.

Cars in general used to be cooler, and now it seems like they killed one of my favorites. RIP STi

Why brand the e-ra with sti logos, then change the name to ste for consumer cars?

Got it. I thought that might be your response.

I don’t think they have thought a lot of this through. We also don’t know if this will replace STI or just be a branding for EVs. STI could remain the motorsports division and STe is just for retail cars. Or it might be nothing more than a trademark that is never used like Columbia.

Of course they could learn things and it could trickle down, but wouldn't it be better to just put those things straight into the EV Forester? Is there anything that trickled down from the STi in the last 15 years. Motor, gearbox, differentials, brakes, suspension, all mothballed. None of which ever found their way to another car in the US (maybe you could say brakes on previous WRX PP, but that's currently dead as well).

I'll be thrilled to be proven wrong as a long time Subaru fan and past owner, but it feels like a mistep to me.
