![]() w00t our dealership just got in a 1988 Subaru DL in on trade and I decided to pick it up
![]() Doesn't run right now but I believe it just needs a fuel pump which I have already ordered.. It's got 267k miles and came with the original key, hidden behind the license plate haha... I'm looking forward to getting it running and fixing it up. Anyone know of any good sites for parts/accessories??

![]() I would say your coil is going out. Sounds like the coil is overheating and after it cools you are gtg.
If it was the timing it wouldnt have anything to do with cutting the engine off and then letting it restart after a while. Timing related would be a constant. I have been stranded before due to a coil problem, luckily it happened at night and when I opened the hood the coil was red hot. It cooled off and I got back home. The next day looked at it and the coil had cracked and the oil had leaked out. A new coil should solve the problem. See if you can get a look at it next time it shuts off, be careful of touching it if it doesnt look hot. Good luck Jay-R |

![]() My grandmother is the original owner of a 1988 XT6 with all options. She can't drive now, and has given the car to my mom. It has about 75K miles on it and has been babied. It's had some ailments:
- bad gas mileage - ~15mpg in mixed - slow electrical drain - dead battery in 1-2 weeks if not run - and now, the front air shocks have failed (to pump up) My mother was told by the local dealer they can install *normal* struts for $1500. That sounds a little steep. The 3 shops that she has taken it to haven't even bothered to look at the air pump, hose, or shocks to see what is wrong. My mom wants to sell it, since these 3 problems seem unfixable to her for a decent price. I would dive in, but I don't seem to have have time for my own Subaru project car (1998 Outback + 1994 Japanese spec turbo). Suggestions? - sell it off cheap locally? (in Idaho) - Ebay? - normal struts can't be more than $600 installed? - try to get it to Salt Lake where someone might know how to work on one? - get tips here and fix it myself? Thanks for any help. -Scott |

![]() Hi,
I'm a new member. I just got my 84 GL Hatchback 4WD up and running and have a few questions. First, which direction do I turn the idle mixture screw at the base of the carb to lean out the mixture? I assume it's counterclockwise but I'm not sure. Second, is there anywhere I can get a diagram of the vaccuum lines? There's so many lines I'm not sure if I have them hooked up properly. Also, how do I test for vaccuum pressure and what's normal? Thanks for any help. bdmartin |

![]() Old Sub's FTW! I love my '86 Brat, my dad's '86 GL, and my '89 XT.
For the XT6 owner. As for the Struts. I changed out all four struts in my XT in one day with some help from a couple of Rednecks (gotta love'em.) I got the struts from a XT6 (Mine was the four-banger.), costed $400 for all four from the junkyard (in Alaska). Look in the Junkyards, but don't be surprised if none are there(The on I went to had 3 XT6's and 1 XT, but it was the only one from Anchorage to Wasilla and Palmer). There's also a bunch of Subaru's that had those struts (regular ones). I'll try to touch back if I can remember which ones. If you want you can replace them yourself, if you can find the time. The back are a pain to get to, you'll have to dig between the trunk and behind the back seat, but easy to go in with a little force. The front are easy for me. Be sure once you'll swapped them to unplug the compressor. It's under the Driver side front fender. I was able to get to it just by pulling the plastic wheel well cover and it's right there (Looking at the front). That way you'll save the compressor from damage in case you want to go back, or sell it to someone that needs one. If you want to keep it and just fix the issue, odds are it's the strut. My XT had one blown in the front and both rears going bad. As for the MPG and the slow batt drain, I'll see someone that knows about the ER27 engine, and/or XT's and XT6's in general. Though you may want to talk to a electrical specialist about the Batt Drain. It may be some wire is being shorted to ground. Though with changing/fixing the strut issue you might increase your MPG, after an alignment. Last edited by Chaos Fluffy; 09-26-2011 at 12:25 AM. |
