Post Dumb wagon question

I know the wagon has about an 1" less width and track, though the interior dimensions are pretty much the same. I'm wondering WHY this is so. Is there some technical reason for the narrower track, or did the engineering folks actually kaotao to the designers, who wanted smooth fenders? The latter would amaze me, at such an engineering oriented company.

Seems kinda silly to me- isn't it more expensive to build 2 separate chasis?

Smae chassis, different geometry, The bulges in the body accomadate the lager track and give the sedan a more sporty look.

The part of the chassis that holds the suspension is probably pushed out. The lower control arm mounts, and the top of the strut mount etc are all moved out a bit more than on the wagon. The sedan will probably have longer drive shafts too, since the engine/ tranny are in the same place but the wheels/hubs are farther away.
The interior dimensions are not affected because that part of the chassis is almost identicle between the two cars (aside from the obvious sedan-wagon differences).

Thanks for all the info guys, but I'm still wondering WHY they went through all this trouble- just to keep the fenders smooth??? That's nuts! Someone at Subaru must've toyed w/ the wagon looking more like a forrester w/ blistered fenders?

Actually, now that I think about it I bet all the mounts are in the same place, they will just run different struts, control arms, etc for the wider track. If you look at the picture of the wagon and the sedan with the hoods up, I bet the upper strut mount are in the same place.
This makes sense from a manufacturing standpoint as well. Make the chassis the same, and only vary the suspension. Much easier.

Question

Yeah, I was wondering if the upper strut mounts are the same for both sedan and wagon, and the track being wider on the sedan (only reviews I have seen thus far saying it handles quite well..) isn't there a different geometry going on here between the two cars. The angle on the sedan being more splayed out compared to the wagon?

So mod-wise, that'd be a pain for Wagon owners b/c the struts/springs are all different? No STI swaps on wagons?

It will be the control arms, and the 1/2 shafts that are changed, not the mounting points. That is why there is no AL arms for the wagon yet. My guess is that they will show up in a year or so when a STI wagon comes out. Or it might be that the STI wagon will grow the fender bulges.
