I have asked why coasting in neutral was illegal a while back and the best answer I got was that if your coasting down a hill in neutral you can not drive around the obstacles on the road, whereas if you were in gear you would have power to just drive around it.

Is it still the law in Washington that you must give way if you've got more than 5 cars behind you, and that you are required to keep a trash bag in the car?

As RidinLow said, downhill gravity drives the engine to spin above idle, therefore cutting off the injectors. If you're carbed, then neutral is more fuel efficient.
I think there is something about towing auto AWD's due to the engine not driving the tranny pumps, causing lubrication starvation when driven by the wheels even though the diffs aren't protesting. But then again auto 2WD's never had a problem? Gary |

Who ever needs to tow a Subaru? These things never break down. Yes I know I just cursed myself, so if you see me sitting next to my car please pick me up...
Wanna hear an odd law, how about in order to buy a mouse trap you have to have a hunting license..haha oh well. Did you know it is still legal for someone to take the cows to the common and let them graze? Joe |

Here's another reason why you shouldn't coast in neutral down any hill -- what if your car stalls?!?!?
This actually happened to a friend of mine while I was in his jeep! We were coasting down this kill that's about 2.5km long. It's fairly steep -- steep enough for them to close it off in the winter. Anywayz, as we were coasting down the hill in neutral, near the bottom of the hill there's a little dip and for some wierd reason or another, my friend's jeep stalled as we went through this dip. If he had to steer, brake, or do any type of emergency manouver (sp?) we'd be in deep doo-doo without the aid of power steering/brakes. Remember, his engine had stalled. Anyway, he pushed the clutch in, turned the key and his jeep started back up again just in time to stop for the light. I never coast in neutral going down a hill for that very reason -- with the car in gear, how can it stall?!? Besides, I never touch the brakes going down hill -- only when necessary! I find it ironic that as I start down a hill, I accelerate normally up to the speed limit (with people tailing behind me), and then stick her into 5th and roll down the hill (while the person who was tailing me at the top of the hill is no where near me when I'm at the bottom! LaterZ! Darren!! |

hmm..i always just keep it in gear and just take the foot off the gas and let gravity work a little..or cruise control BUT i keep it in gear and a little gas just to keep it at the speed limit..if it goes over..just tap tap tap the cruise control down a few mph (yes i am THAT lazy )

So why didn't he just stick it in gear and let out the clutch? [This message has been edited by 2WDrift (edited April 03, 2001).] |

I've had many friends pulled over for these ridiculous laws. Can't they just be happy with their donuts and coffee? It's not like we're shooting at them...well at least not yet!

These laws aren't that bad. The coasting thing could never really be enforced anyway, so you shouldn't worry about that. The lowering thing is a good law too. What happens if you get a flat tire and your car is lowered past the bottom of your wheel.

remarcable, Its only bad to tow an AWD car with the 2 wheel off the ground towers. You need a flatbed, I think neutral rolling lal 4's is ok. Correct me if I'm wrong.

You can tow a manual with 4 wheels on the ground in nuetral, not with an auto, which is becuase the auto needs power to work right? Something like that.

how about this one,
in Wisconsin, auxillary lights must be mounted below the level of the center of the headlamps... ragardless of headlight height. ie, the idiot with foglights in the bumper of a ford excursion that shine in my eyes are legal, Subigals lights are not. But get this, I find no mention of maximun brightness, just minimun, so I guess 150 watt headlights are ok ;-) |

In WA engine Braking is illegal from big trucks, this is probably to help with sound abatements. I think that the legislative intent of TEXASRS' signs is geared (no pun intended) towards semi trucks.

Pennsylvania It is contrary to Pennsylvania law to discharge a gun, cannon, revolver or other explosive weapon at a wedding. It is illegal to have over 16 women live in a house together because that constitutes a brothel. However up to 120 men can live together, without breaking the law. It it illegal to sleep on top of a refrigerator outdoors. MY FAVORITE!!!! Any motorist driving along a country road at night must stop every mile and send up a rocket signal, wait 10 minutes for the road to be cleared of livestock, and continue. A special cleaning ordinance bans housewives from hiding dirt and dust under a rug in a dwelling. You may not sing in the bathtub. Fireworks stores may not sell fireworks to Pennsylvania residents. A person is not eligible to become Governor if he/she has participated in a duel. Any motorist who sights a team of horses coming toward him must pull well off the road, cover his car with a blanket or canvas that blends with the countryside, and let the horses pass. If the horses appear skittish, the motorist must take his car apart, piece by piece, and hide it under the nearest bushes. Ministers are forbidden from performing marriages when either the bride or groom is drunk. No more than two packages of beer at a time may be purchased, unless you are buying from an official "beer distributor" All liquor stores must be run by the state. Motorized vehicles are not to be sold on Sundays. You may not catch a fish with your hands. You may not catch a fish by any body part except the mouth. Dynamite is not to be used to catch fish. Though you do not need a fishing license to fish on your own land, but a hunting license is required to hunt on your own land. Allentown There is a ban on men becoming aroused in public. Carlisle In the middle of town, one must pay a fee of $50 dollars a year to park on a particular block. At night, however, the cars must be moved for street cleaning. This law is enforced even if snow or ice prevents the cars from being moved. Connellsville One's pants may be worn no lower than five inches below the waist. Danville All fire hydrants must be checked one hour before all fires. Millville One may not shoot any dog that is found wandering the streets. The sale of alcohol is prohibited. Morrisville It is required that a woman have a permit to wear cosmetics. Newtown Every outlet or switch (which can be purchased for 59 cents) that is installed requires an electrical inspection fee of 1 dollar and 33 cents. Pittsburgh It is still illegal to bring a donkey or a mule onto a trolley car. No one is allowed to sleep on a refrigerator. Ridley Park You cannot walk backwards eating peanuts in front of the Barnstormers Auditorium during a performance. Tarentum Horses are not to be tied to parking meters. |

At Universal Studios, there's a huge hill about 3 blocks long. I sometimes coast in nuetral just to mess around, but I'd better stop that huh?

I dont know about subaru, but GM's automatic trannys have to be in gear for the oil pump in the tranny to work. Thus coasting is not a good thing without ATF (automatic transmission fluid) oil pressure
