Question about an engine replacement..
So I just picked up an 02 WRX, but it had a timing belt slip up, so chances are the heads valves maybe pistons are toast. but I stripped a 99 outback a few years ago that ran and drove just fine, just has a bad head gasket which is a simple fix. my questions is can I run the 99 ej25d(supposedly 99 only had a ph2 block with ph1 internals and ph1 dohc heads) i know there were several different trigger wheels and cam gears, are they interchangable between the ej205 and ej25d, if not would a ph2 crank gear from a SOHC 2.5 be the key? I'm gonna use either the turbo head gaskets or cometics and turn the boost down. I know the open decks actually will take a decent amount of abuse after the defective HG's are replaced and even a bunch of guys boosted. but I'm just wondering if i can use the 02 wrx parts on the longblock, intake and all sensors timing covers if they are different oil feed and return parts ect. this will more than likely just be temporary, till Ican get either and ej255 or 257 and a decent set of factory wrx heads. but if it works out ok I'll keep the ej25d and tune it for like 10psi or so, nothing crazy. the higher compression and longer stroke should need much boost to be fun.

Nobody has any ideas? I did fond that the crank gears are different but are interchangeable, bit the can gear is the issue, different triggers on it but supposedly has the same triggers but has a few extra so possibly removing the extras may work. Bit then the intakes are different bolt pattern as well. But maybe an adaptor could be used to retrofit it. Almost like an intake spacer. I'm just hoping I can make this engine work as I am short on cash and the original engine slipping the belt, I'm assuming lots of carnage... And the other motor I have just needs a head gasket :-/

genuine Subaru valves are like $20 each.
why not just repair the EJ20 you have? i've got a 97 OBW with phase 1 EJ25 DOHC but the short block (don't know about the heads) is from a '99 model and is a phase 2 bottom end. since all the phase 2 stuff is legos you should be able to swap gears and whatnot as needed to make it work. |
