Post need mechanical help from my Texas brethren

Ok guys.....watching ya'll scream around the track on sunday and spank most of the honda's really got my juices flowing. I've decided to sell my 72 monte carlo for money to blow on speed parts :-). I need to replace the valve seals on the motor (chev 350) and I'm without my shop! I live in an apartment now...before I try to rough it in my little under resourced garage....does anyone have a nice set-up that I could use for a day? Set up would be compressed air and appropriate tools (feeler gauges, valve tool). I could rough it on my own but I've learned in life sometimes it's better to ask for help.

Well, I don't have compressed air but my neighbor does. When would you need the use of my garage. I used to be a mechanic for 16 yrs so what do ya need? I just hope it's enough to keep the valves closed...

Forrest

what I need is what you are offering- some tech assistance and a place to work. I've done a fair amount of work on domestic motors but never performed the old valve seal replacement with the heads on. I do have a small compressed air tank and will get the spark hole attachment for the air line. The back up is always a nylon rope. I may go ahead and buy a new set of feeler gauges and I already have the little do-dads one uses to adjust the rockers with the motor running and not get oil everywhere.

I'm out of town this weekend but next weekend might work great. I live in Clear lake so we appear to be pretty close.

What's your number again?

William

You might need a valve spring compressor as well. You can rent one from a local auto parts store. There are two valve spring stops that will need to be removed before you can remove the seal.

Sounds like we need a team wrench session. I have quite a few things to mod myself, but one involves welding on my Z28. I'll gladly trade some wrench time for some weld time!

I just ordered a new diff cover that has a bottom drain plug (thanks GM for not doing this in the first place!) and a Y-Pipe from SLP (should be here in 2 weeks). The Y bolts up to everything but the right Cat, it needs to be welded. ('98 has dual cats - one off each manifold).
Oh yeah, I also have a tubular panhard and boxed rear control arms to put on. Can you tell I'm past warranty! And finally, I don't want to forget that K&N of yours Forrest! That might take a while to install though!

Maybe we could have a shadetree mechanics day over at Forrest's place!

Orion- I can weld, or "braize" using an oxy-acetlyene torch....depends on the job you have in mind and the materials to be fused.

how about Saturday the 19th?

yep, i'm gonna join the 2 together! that way I have the 1/4 performance from the Z28 and the handling for Rally-X and Auto-X from the WRX. It's the best of both worlds!

Really, it's an entry into the 2002 Art Car Parade...
