I have no idea why any tire manufacture would come to the plate to supply tires for F1. Seems like a large cost for nothing in return. No idea what Bridgestone gets out of the supply deal other they currently have other then advertising but doubt they are selling anymore tires being the supplier.

If you're rolling on turds, then so is everyone else. But if you're rolling on the greatest tires ever to come out of a mold... so is everyone else. Tire war = big bucks that nobody wants to spend. |

Yes, but it's all relative. Just being in the grid surely costs Bridgestone a fortune, but I would bet that they are spending the same if not less to supply the whole grid with control tires than they would if they were only supplying half of it and competing with another brand.

Michelin already said that F1 has to run a more production size rim 17-18 inch before they would comeback

We need an option to vote for "I don't care as long as we have a tire war on 18" wheels."

They should all go to spec 205/55/16 RE92s
I think this would be a good way for a smaller maker to get their name out there more. Hankook has been mentioned. And Michelin wants to keep talking about how 'green' their tires are if they are to come back |

-A tire war would lead to more marginal tires, which would increase the Button/Hamilton tire treatment difference that we've already seen glimpes of this season.
-A tire war would be more expensive than a control tire. So...there's the primary Pro & Con in a nutshell. |

I like tire wars, Bridgestone was great for a while, then they were simply much better in the rain...then it swapped around a bit and Michelin were much better in the rain. Makes things more interesting a lot of the time than having one spec tire.

The Avon Question
I have not seen reports on the costs of the Pirelli's, (they will present to the teams @ the Spanish GP), but the Avon tires are reported to be 1/3rd the price of the Michelins.
As Sam Michael alluded to in that linked article, the open question is what will be the quality of Avon tires? Tire quality problems happen to the best of manufacturers. An obvious example would be the failing Michelin tires at Indy in 2005, though there are plenty of other examples of course (I don't mean to pick only on Michelin here). Avon tires are used in various racing series, so they know racing. Their pricing presents a pretty strong incentive to go with them, but they ought to provide evidence to the teams and FIA of a rigorous quality program that ensures a high level of parity, and strong engineering abilities to ensure that they do not create their own Michelin Indy 2005 moment. As a fan, the brand matters little to me, as I'm more interested in parity (all sets of tires of the same compound should be very, very similiar). And second, I'm interested in safety. The obvious worst case safety failure would be showing up to a venue for a grand prix weekend, and all tires on hand are not structural sufficient for the venue (aka the Indy 2005 scenario). But beyond that, safety concerns would include tires which deflate for other quality reasons, and cause a high speed crash and injuries or death. |

too bad avon tires for street cars are god awful...
i'd rather see 1 tire manufacturer than multiple manufacturers. or multiple manufacturers with tires that are close in performance across the board. |

Bridgestones are pretty horrible too, as well as Good Year. Just because they're good on the street doesn't mean they'll be good on the track, and vice versa.

I imagine they'd do a very good job for formula one. I just would like to see a set of rock hard tires that is consistent for just over 40% of a race with a very narrow and peaky zone of optimal adhesion. It'll force two stops, delineate the faster guys in the corners and greatly increase the braking zones so we might see some more overtaking. |
