blown turbo?
My 03 bugeye has been stage 2+ for about 20k - only 77k on it
I put a turbo blanket on it about 2 months ago, and a couple weeks ago it started smoking only on startup. When the car is cold and I start it, I can idle for as long as I want, but as soon as any boost comes, it smokes for about the 1st 1-2 minutes of boost driving. Once warm, no problems. I'm losing just a little bit of coolant, over a few months, but my hoses leak a tiny bit (overflow hose off the mishimoto 't' doesn't seal all the way) I don't really see much oil loss, if any, or any signs of coolant in the oil. Engine running, oil cap off, no signs of smoke (I can feel the engine pulse/air though which I assume is normal) I know I need to pull the downpipe to check for oil, but does this sound like turbo seals going, since it only happens on the 1st boosts of the day? When I did my timing belt, one of the water pump bolts is slightly stripped, but I don't see any signs of coolant from around the pump area.

Smoke on stratup usually indicates valve sals are worn, However if your feeling lots of pulses of air from the oil cap you might have bad rings and leaking compression into the block.
A leak down test will confirm if you have bad rings. |

A bad turbo will generally smoke all the time and not just on start up. A compression and leak down test would be a good idea

Thanks, I was afraid it might indicate rings. I'll see if I can get it done soon.
About how much time (shop hours) should I expect for a leak down test? |

Should be roughly an hour job for someone who has dealt with spark plugs on a subaru before.

Thanks. I know this is getting ahead of things, but has anyone used ATP AT-205 on their WRX?
I've used it on my wife's Honda with good success on the rear main seal. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000NVW1LM/ref=oh_details_o05_s01_i02?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I know if there are cracked ringlands, it won't help, but if it is the seals leaking from getting old, it might save me a bunch of $'s. |

Just to update in case it is helpful to someone else searching this problem.
I replaced my air idle valve gasket and the problem is resolved. There must have been just a little leak as the car cooled down so when I started up there was some coolant. As a bonus, my car doesn't idle like crap whenever my ac compressor kicks on now. I had replaced/cleaned the air idle valve once before and it was a bit dirty this time around too. |
