No updates, as she's parked for winter.
I would like to build that new motor over the winter, but it doesn't look like I will have the funds. I would like to sell my UEL header and get an EL instead. I would also like to install my Invidia Q300 axleback I bought and weld a resonator in the mid-pipe. I just love that smooth refined sound of the EL header. So, maybe I will just do that and hit Dom up for a tuning session in the spring...then enjoy for the summer and build next winter.

^^^ I will build, but next winter. I want to drive it as is this summer and go to a couple shows.
Little update: I got her out of storage and first had to find and fix this small, but annoying water leak on the pass side floor. The carpet would get a little damp in hard rain. I found the factory seam sealer was cracked, probably from the previous owners fender bender accident. I stripped it all down to bare metal and re-sealed all the seams with 3M Urethane seam sealer. I finally bought my Agency Power EL header. I will probably sell my UEL AP header I have on there now. And of course to run the header I had to get an 06'+ sti oil pan, baffle, dip-stick, tube, and Killer B pickup. I've also been continuing my stock piling of parts needed for that next motor build. Each side job I do, I set a little money aside and save up for the next part on my list. Got the 2.0L crank for the de-stroker budget +2mm MPS rods (no longer available) Big purchase....GSC S1 AVCS cams! I just need GSC beehive springs, Ferrea valves, port my D25 heads, 4032 pistons (either Mahle, or custom JE's), add AVCS wires on Link. Plan for next winter: pull motor, do a proper paint job, install new built motor, and break-in/tune in the spring. I'm also toying with the idea of a very subtle custom wide body during the paint project |

Update:
I completed a few small things I've had on my to-do list. I had to make a new coolant reservoir since the old one I made warped a tiny bit during welding. This caused an intermittent seal on the plunger of the rad cap. This caused the system to not hold pressure and cause the temp needle to start climbing. I decided to build the new one out of Aluminum. I found an aluminum rad neck on ebay from CX Racing, and it fits the stock Subaru cap! I had a 3" piece of aluminum tubing, so I cut out some caps for it, welded on the neck, a couple ports and brackets, and I'm back in biz! Here is what it looks like after a light glass bead before powder coating. You can also see the stock sway bar brackets to the right...more on that below. I also installed my new rear sway bar. I can't believe after all the mods I've done to this car including all the bushing upgrades, I was still on the stock 16mm rear sway bar . I finally pulled the trigger on a 22mm adjustable bar from whiteline, and paired that with my Perrin rear end links I've had sitting in a box for a couple years now. I decided to beef up the stock sway bar mounts since I didn't spring for the Whiteline ones. I just decided to "box in" the stockers. I cut out some thick steel sides and tig'ed it all up. It was cheap and they are super stiff now! After some powder coating! Biggest rear bar they make for the BD installed with the Perrin end links Installed coolant tank I've got a few other things planned and want to get her ready for an Auto Cross coming up on the 15th. I've never done it and have always wanted to. Time to stop tearing her apart all the time and actually have some fun driving! More to come! |

Thanks Dom! I want to rent my house out and move over there so I can beg you for a job . I would love to build custom stuff and be in Subaru heaven all day long.
Thanks Todd! The only racing I've done is Go-Karts, and it's too much fun, and too much money . I spent $75 for just 3 short sessions in Seattle (sy-kart I think?) I've always done quite well on the karts, so I'm hoping that will translate into decent auto-x driving. I will report back on how it goes. |

I like what you did here..
But you might have the same issue I did, the tabs would break off. Might be a good idea to add to that as well. |

Thanks! When I first turbo'ed her, she was still on the stock auto tranny. It was super fun to drive, but it didn't last long . |

I'm figuring on doing a complete WRX swap with WRX auto tranny. I figure a wrecked auto WRX might be cheaper, plus it would be a bit more challenging than the last couple swaps that were on 5spd and 6spds. Bonus, it's wife friendly.

That sounds good. I almost bought a wrecked Auto WRX for that same reason. I was going to swap my wife's 97' Outback to have the turbo power and still have an auto that could handle the power. Shouldn't be too bad if you have the whole car to work from. Make sure you do a build thread.

Well, the time has come to build my new de-stroker! I'll be going over after Turkey Day to build the short block at MPS.
Short block: 08' sti case halves 703 casting "240" 2.0L crank MPS +2 rods Manley 99.75 pistons King or ACL bearings (whichever gives the desired clearances) 8.4:1 compression ratio All the rotating parts were balanced together from the crank pulley to the flywheel/pressure plate. Hoping for a really tight and quiet motor, minimal piston slap from tight clearances, plus the added bonus of less side loading from the geometry of the 2.3 Heads: 08' wrx D25. Adding the wiring to my harness to run the AVCS too! I'm still undecided what I want to do.....either go all out with porting and +1mm valves, or just leave stock ports and valves with my GSC S1's with upgraded valve springs and keep it simple. I'm also undecided if I will stay with the BW s256, or use a GTX3071 or maybe a GTX2867. I'm not really going for all out power and 9k rpms. I just want a silky smooth, refined motor/exhaust note, a fat power band from 4k to 8k with around 400whp. That is also why I'm switching to an EL header and trying to make a nice quiet exhaust. I'll update with pictures from the build soon. Hoping to have this broke in and tuned by early summer! |

Dude, you are in the wrong business. The level of detail on all aspects of your car is amazing added to the the fact that you diy nearly everything. Good luck with the build

making your hobby your job, just because you're good at it, is the same mistake I made. After a few years, dealing with a lot of people who don't know anything about cars really takes the fun out of it. |

Your right...it's hard sometimes to not let things snowball into complexity

Thanks for selling me this Borg Fuji! It doesn't whistle like I thought it would. It does make a wicked air swooshing sound when spooling up though. I really want to see what it will do on the de-stroker, but I also want to try a GTX3071. I wish I had unlimited funds to try all sorts of different combos Quote:

Indeed, probably better off as a hobby. Yes I still have the RS. I cleaned up the FHI brakes and installed as well as freshed the suspension. No where near as intense as your build. Maybe when she gets retired from daily driven duty she can get similar treatment.

^^^Glad to hear you still have it...such a clean example of an RS! I just picked up a 00' RS sedan for my winter car / DD. I was shocked at how fun they are stock! Mine does have a Forester 4:44 trans /rear diff which makes it a little more snappy.
In other news, I got to go to MPS today and do the "build your own" program..... a dream come true for me. It felt like Christmas morning and going to Disneyland all wrapped into one! There's the MAN himself...Craig Woolman of MPS. The baddest builder in the land! These are the MPS +2 rods of old before the newer H-Tuff +2. These are known to stay together in 600whp motors, so they will be plenty for me. They also have really nice ARP L19 rod bolts in them! Lots and lots of measuring, and recording, and crunching numbers with the calculator. Removing the torque-plates after more measuring Filing the rings one by one, making sure the gaps are perfect, and making sure everything stays organized and with the correct bore. Mating the two halves together....it's a little tricky on long-rod 75mm stroke engines. Learned lots of tricks from the grandmaster today! All done! |
