Trustworthy shops... engine swap/wire/rebuild
Now I know this may kind of be covered but I guess I want some recent info. Whether or not you know... my car has been down for what.. a year. Right now I need a shop that will possibly have GOOD, REPUTABLE machine shop disassemble and rebuild my built motor (that's basically never run) and in the end, get the car running. Need to make sure there are no mechanical problems once it's made sure that the engine is good. There are a few "good" shops in the tri-state but really I don't know of any up to par with the "best" around. I just haven't read that many reviews on any one shop being great with engine rebuilds. I'm trying to keep it within 100 miles of Bergen County, NJ so I can use my Triple A.
So... any ideas with this headache of a car? Thanks guys... -Mike (sick of driving a 97 montero sport with 150K miles)

Yea.. figured precision but still haven't heard enough about the most important part.. the engine building/rebuilds.
Sorry to not previously note but personal experience is king in this thread. |

I've watched rich build engines and trannies, he is meticulous with it and makes sure everything is done correctly and works great. He build my RA trans and I haven't had any kind of issue with it at all. I know it's not an engine, but the biggest thing with a subaru trans is how it was assembled and mine's been just fine.

I would bring it to precision.
Maybe search for some threads or looking at different member journals on various sites and see those who have precision built blocks and how they are satisfied. Just for comfort. I would never go to the above mentioned site. |

I would prob say Precision. I know they are out of the 100 mile range for you, but might be worth it to you in the long run...

I just was at Precision yesterday and was discussing engine building with Rich and what parts he has been using. I must say what he was telling me he is using and seeing what he has done is good enough for me and I come from an US engine building shop.
He is also rebuilding my JDM 6MT so I wouldn't leave it up to a shop I wouldn't trust. |

Mike,
Rich built my new LGt engine w Mahle Pistons....it's been great. I've seen them do way bigger jobs than just stock builds. Definitly give them a call. They will not do wrong by you. Lonnie |

Justin is still here. He just got back from vacation. We build a ridiculous amount of engine. If you have questions, just give me a shout and I will go over with you whatever you like. There are a hundred different combinations, and I can go over all of them with you if you like, or I can suggest based on what you are looking for. We build in house. The only thing I have done outside is the machine work. I have been working with the same machinist since 1998, even before we were open here. The reason I use him is becaus he is as meticulous as I am. Sleeving is done by another machinst that I also have worked with for years. We have built dozens of engines this year, and I have pictures if you are interested, both of our builds, and those that we have corrected from other shops.
We are moving to the new building over the weekend, so I may be hard to get a hold of by phone, but we shoiuld be all set up by early next week. If you can't get me on the phone, shoot us over an email. [email protected] Rich |
