Default Turbo Rattle - 2014 WRX

I can't seem to pinpoint what this rattle is. Sounds like metal inside the turbo. Just started suddenly, happens at idle, cruise, light & off throttle. Maybe I just can't hear it on heavier throttle. I think it may be the wastegate? I took off the downpipe yesterday and found there to be no shaft play & spins smoothly and quietly, however the large & small washer looking things in the turbine housing on the wastegate are free to rotate (see first image). Is that normal? The rod is tight though. I think it's being slow to spool, but I'm kinda scared to really rev it out. I looked into the up pipe heat shield which I found is totally loose, but the sound does not change when I touch it. Also just did an oil change and found nothing in the oil. Thoughts?

Update: Car is starting to stall now too may tow it to the dealer tmrw.

the up pipe heatshield has been known to break loose and rattle. Also check tranny dipstick under TMIC

Stupid ? but are you tuned for the DP?

Been protuned for 40k. My up pipe heat shield was totally loose, but that wasn't causing any rattle. Threw me for a loop when I found it though.

Turns out it was a frozen wastegate rod, just some penetrating lubricant from the dealer and it's running like new again! I guess it was those washers that were rattling around..? And I guess the turbo not spinning at idle due to the stuck wastegate blocked sufficient air from getting though the intake side of the turbo as well... causing the stalling? That's my interpretation anyway. Thoughts?

Default Same situation

This situation is happening to me. While having my suspension looked at I asked them to tighten the heat shield that was rattling under my car and they told me it was the wastegate rattling. It was stuck shut and then stuck open but they didn't have time to check it out but their initial response was to replace the turbo.

Taking it to another shop on Friday to see what they can do and will explain it to them with this as an example. With luck, they will fix it the same as yours, and maybe have to replace the actuator and not the entire turbo.

Has your problem remained fixed without further repairs?

EDIT: no aftermarket parts, no tune. 112k miles on original turbo.
