I meant to post something last fall about this. I always check the cap before I buy. One day in Walmart, I found four jugs with the seal broken. Never had the cap fly off of one though, lol. Glad it didn't tip over.

Pennzoil just has the cap. I think Castrol is double sealed with cap and foil.

674 miles ago I added a quart of oil to the fill line. that's the lowest for me. its steadily getting worse.

These oil consumption issues tend to be progressive.
My GMC started using oil. The rear main seal went out. Gonna beef up the transmission for towing while it's out. It has a good excuse though, its old and has lots of miles put on. Lots of towing.

Yes, my 2013 gradually consumed more oil. At 13K miles, it was at about 1 qt. per 1,400 miles which probably qualified it to have the engine ripped out, torn down, and have the rings replaced.

Due to having another kid on the way, and me being too tall to have a rear facing seat behind me, we needed to get a bigger vehicle which saved me from the hassle of consumption tests and major engine work. Traded the Impreza for a 14.5 Camry SE V6. Looked at all of the midsizes, lots of very nice choices. In the end, didn't want direct injection or a CVT. Long story short, Toyota has nice incentives, good track record, and a conventional automatic with conventional port injection with the Camry.

This is great forum, good luck to everyone who are experiencing issues. I have my fingers crossed with the Camry. Hopefully the favorable reliability statistics translate into real world experience.

Edit: For what it's worth, 1,600 miles in with the Camry, hasn't used a noticeable amount of oil. My Impreza with the same mileage had used a quart which I wishfully attributed to break in consumption.

I feel ya there.
My last oil top off was provided by a friend who drives a new toyota truck. He thought I was crazy for having to add a quart between changes.

So I took my car into the dealership. They are performing an oil consumption analysis. Why is it that for Subaru's faulty product, I have to pay for the oil changes? They are $55 EACH. I normally do it myself for right at $32.

Eff this. $46 (for two changes) more for Subaru to investigate their own product?

^So you have to pay for the oil changes during an oil consumption analysis? That sucks

Correct. My plan is to demand a refund if they find something wrong.

I.e. You charged me for two oil changes but then found out you had bad piston rings. Therefore I want a refund for the cost of the two changes.

I mean, it's still considered warranty work, right?

That's complete BS! My dealership has never charged me for and oil change for the start of a consumption test and I've had several of them.

I'd be on the phone complaining to someone at SOA. They'll most likely reimburse you.

10-4! I ain't no pushover.

I've never had anything like this done before so I wanted to understand the precedent before just demanding it be free.

In my experiences dealerships in general are very shady and try to squeeze you for every last penny they can get away with.

Even my dealership, one of the better dealerships that I've dealt with, still tries to pull a fast one on me once in awhile. They occasionally try to sneak in a service or two that I did not request or don't need when I schedule an oil change. They have also tried to charge me for things in the past that should have been free. Also, they once tried to charge me double for a service that they performed. If I was just some ignorance Joe Schmoe, I would have never noticed and never called them out on it.

All I can say is good luck and don't give into whatever your dealership tell you. You need to keep on your toes with these places or they will rake you over the coals.

I agree. This is the best of the three dealerships in the Houston area yet my decision to do my own maintenance is always validated when I step into this specific dealership or any shop.

don't pay them to do the oil consumption tests. Call SOA and stand on your rights as a consumer.

Thanks guys. This is my first car so unsure how warranty work is handled!

Called SoA, I still have to pay the dealership but I'll receive a check directly to my house for the work from SoA.

Concur with others that some dealerships are great on the sales side and shady on the service side. I had a love hate relationship with our Ford dealership for a while. They stopped pulling my chain once they realized I knew what I was talking about. The dozen donuts I brought in one day may have helped too.

So seriously, bring some donuts in sometime when you have work done. A small act can go a long ways sometimes.

No problem. Glad to hear that SOA came through for you! Sometimes you just have to go over the dealership's head.

I've had dealings with SOA several times over the past two years because of issues with my Impreza and my dealership. I must say that they've been extremely helpful and very willing to do what is necessary to keep me a satisfied customer.

SOA has also been helpful for my fam as well - they covered my dad's catalytic converter even though it was out of warranty. I told him to call SOA and he explained how many Subie's we've bought. They sent a nice check to cover the cost of replacing it

This is huge. You'd never get this kind of treatment from VWoA without a recall.

Yeah, this would be the only reason why I would consider purchasing another Subaru. Well, this and Subaru's excellent AWD system.

Donuts DO NOT help at Subaru dealers. I tried.

If my car burned oil, and it did, I would be on the phone voicing my concerns to the manufacturer.
