any rec for bar-ends? I know they've fallen out of fashion lately but I like the secondary position for when numbness sets in

Don't get them on a MTB. There are other bars that give dual positions without the danger of clipping a tree - can't think of the name right now, though...

you don't necessarily need to replace it with a single crank either. you can just remove the big and small rings like I did

damn. I had a blue Mongoose FS1...same deal...saved up forever, rode it everywhere. it was 'stolen' when my little bro's friend 'borrowed' it and left it in front of his house.

I've had them on MTB's going back to 1991 and never caught one. I have, however, smashed one INTO a tree It protected my hand at least.

In 1985 my Hutch Trick Star got ripped off so I replaced it was a Hutch Wind Styler because I didnt have enough money for another Trick Star. Then I change a bunch of parts on it like we all did and still do.
Anyways, I decided to build an exact replica of it for the hell of it. It was the toughest bike I ever built because some of the parts were impossible to find! It took me over 2 years for some of the parts.
Here I am in 1986:

Here's my new one!

and of course I had to have a "tribute" photo taken in modern times!

That's actually pretty nice! You should have seen the cat-back exhaust I mailed once! UPS didn't mind whatsoever.

UPS seems to be cool about most things. I'm worried about the USPS nazis. I got nailed with a $13 surcharge shipping out a wheel today.

Thanks.

There's a huge following...some of the rare parts cost well over $1000 for stuff in MINT condition. I've even sold original DECALS for over $200.
There's national competitions and all that nonsense just like any other "hobby."

The way I ship my orders:

USPS: 1-13oz 1st class mail ALWAYS. 1-2lbs. priority mail ALWAYS. 3+lbs. priority (only for destinations close by, otherwise rate increases greatly)

Fedex: everything else that doesn't go USPS. Anything oddly shaped goes Fedex, USPS will either refuse it, return to me, or they'll ship it and beat the hell out of it. Anything that requires detailed tracking or insurance goes Fedex.

My brother in law's girlfriend was telling her 7 year old son that I rode bikes. He had this shocked look on his face and asked why I still rode bikes at my age.

The best part is that I'm only 26, married, and have no kids. My wife is in for a rough time when I hit my midlife crisis.

I still dont understand kids these days. I can still remember when I got a nintendo, sega, sega saturn, super nintendo etc. They were fun for maybe a hour at a time, but I loved picking up the bike and going on trails or just making jumps. I have fear for the future generations.

Even though thats funny as hell, the fact of the matter is I've been riding bmx bikes for the last 28 or so years. If I need to feel more "mature" I do have a MTB like all the other old guys.

Road bikes are tough to beat because you can just get on and GO. With a downhiller, you need to load up, drive to the mtn, etc...etc... and it turns into a whole production. Depends on how often you want to ride. If you want to ride at least 4 or 5 times a week, I'd go with a road bike hands down.
