Building my 2nd AE86… Can’t decide
So after staying away from the 86 life for 4 years, I finally got back and got another AE86 . It’s a hatch with clean title and NA 4agze long block (Still not sure if big port or small, but my guess its small port). Nothing fancy it’s a 30 years old car with some dents and rust here and there.
I already make my plan for the chassis/body and suspension. But really can’t decide on the engine setup? Swap in a blacktop 20v, or just do the full altezza rs200 swap (dual beams 3sge with oem 6 speed ) I have done the beams swap in my 1st 86 back in 2008 and hell it was fast and fun, thu it did gain 35lbs on front end, and 30lbs on the transmission area. I’m going for street build with track ability use. 20v is nice and will be light weight, but what worry me its too old now, and when built with my set budget it will be around 150whp (and a max of 180whp if I want to go more aggressive build in future). The other swap case if I went as my last build, I will make 170whp on a stock 3sge and more important a newer engine that is proven to be very reliable for long distances not to mention the oem 6 speed. Also there is a chance to build it more in the future to 230whp when all things sorted. Both engines rev to 8,000 rpm which is good. 20v is less torque and the 3sge is 65lbs heavier with much more torque and power. So fellas, which route should I go? Keep it a 4age? Or go modern 3sge? Thanks Mohammed

Uhhh... Is the AE86 a Subaru model I don't know about? Why are you posting about a Toyota on a Subaru board?

Not that we (Speaking for myself mainly) aren't fans of the AE86, it would be unlikely that most of us, if not all, know very little about the motors or options. Let alone engine codes. If I had a question about my father's Volvo, and the Volvo specific motor in the Volvo. I wouldn't ask about his Volvo on a non-Volvo Volvo. Volvo? Volvo. Hey, look at this! http://club4ag.com/ |

Really? The General section? A completely different forum didn't possibly dawn on you? You don't by chance want to ask some question about a Honda or Chevy build you are doing as well no?

Subaru makes the BRZ which is a triplet to the Scion FR-S and Toyota FT86 of which the AE86 is the spiritual ancestor...... So, Subaru content I guess?
Anyway, members gallery or the Vintage / Old school / sporty cars thread in OT. |

There is an oddly high number of shared members between nasioc and hr.net, myself included. Besides why so much flame, ya wrong section but this is a car forum is it not!? Most gear heads know the 4age and 3sgte motors, just like most know the 2jz and ls series.
I would vote to go with the 20v or some other variation of the 4age. Stick to the roots, you don't need big power. Spend the extra money you save on ITBs and things that improve the soul/feel of the driving experience. That's what the ae86 is all about! |
