Default Any experience with PRE Racing in Portland?

After some searching I'm not finding an overwhelming amount of reviews on PRE. Mostly good and a couple references to "bad tunes". Nothing very recent. I've made an appointment for next Monday to have my DP installed and have them do a dyno tune and am hoping I've made the right decision. They were very helpful over the phone and took quite a bit of time to answer my questions, but can they tune?

Tuners and religion...two things better left off here.
Everyone has their opinions and stories. Go down and meet them, check the place out and do what your gut tells you.

Don't talk about Subaru tuners on a Subaru forum? Not entirely helpful, however I guess I know what you mean. It does seem there are more opinions than fact when it comes to tuners. I would probably go to Surgeline, except the only day I don't work that they're open (monday's) they don't do tunes on those days. Go figure.

They've tuned two of my cars, the most recent they have tuned twice. They tuned it well. My only complaint/concern with them was the last tune I had done felt rushed they didn't seem to take their time as they were tuning a buttload of cars that day but aside from that they seem very knowledgable with the installs etc...

I have had cars tuned at both PRE and Surgeline. I prefer PRE for a few reasons. To each his own.

PRE has also improved customer service a lot in the last few months. Its totally evident as soon as you walk in there.

Thanks for all the replies guys. They were very helpful on the phone and offered to give me a tour of the shop when I come in. Also I felt their quote of $89 to install my downpipe I didn't buy from them was very reasonable. The $400 price for the tune seems about in line with other shops as well.

You do know what I mean. Most the time is gets turned into a bash session, especially with PRE. Normally these threads provide little to no value. This one however may be the rare exception

that statement makes me think there is something I should be aware of.

The only thing you should really be aware of, tuners can be a very personal choice, so you normally find more opinion than fact.

I still say, go down to the shop and talk to them. But talk to a few others as well. See who you like best. A bad tune can be extremely costly. Not something you want to leave up to the opinion of people on the internet

After 2 years of business with them and writing checks in excess of 11K I'm not impressed. To each their own, They did a fantastic job on my motor build, Bobby tunes were always tits, but now that Bobby is gone my business goes to Surgelineline.

Go visit them and Surgeline and then make your own decision.

They're expensive. I had a good tune, but at only 18 lbs of boost I've blown off 4 vac lines that they replaced. My purge control solenoid wasn't secured after being replaced, and was just hanging by the wiring harness. Not very impressed with whatever tech was working on my car.

Personally I've never been a PRE fan. Too many horror stories about builds and mechanical repairs gone wrong. The only thing good about them I've heard was Bobby who did their tuning. But now, even he got tired of their ish and left.

^ yes Eric does there tuning now. Another good place to go is English racing, there more of a Evo shop, but I like to have Zack (used to work at PRE)tune cars, and thats where he works now. Most tunes are around $400

Contacted PRE through his NASIOC account (send member private email) and reply was that he didn't work at PRE anymore...My question is, was that IP designated to Bobby..maybe it was a systems admin problem. Either way I thought it was a little fishy...

what's fishy about it? Maybe he was PRE's forum contact and when he left they didn't assign another person to represent on the forums?

Erich is the current tuner^ as stated above. Whom I've know for a few years.
My input on PRE racing as I've been dedicated to this shop for all and any issues I've had with my04 wrex. For the last three years.
The shop is very knowledgeable in this form of car and many others. The guys that work here are pleasant to work with and treat you with respect unlike some shops where it just seems to me that they are after your bucks in there wallet.

If you have any questions to ask they don't make you feel brain dead when answering even if it is a newb question that could easily be found on google or nasioc.
Some of the corks I've noticed but is going to be inevitable in any shop, is yes these guys are busy from open to close so be patient when waiting around for counter help or to talk to someone. ( In there defense I think they have compensated this by adding more crew to wait the counter)
When quoted a tune at 4bills that's not too shabby and keep in mind that any tune you have done threw them after your initial tune is only going to run you 2bills.

Since I've owned my car there has only been two people for say that have driven it and that I trust. Me and pre.

As other people have said though go In check it out get a feel for the place. Go check out other shops and see how they treat you. And if you pick one it doesn't mean you are tied to them at the hip. You can always take your business somewhere else.

I have always used PRE and love their work, tunes and service. Been going there for 4 years now. Eric/Erik the new tuner is very very smart and really knows his stuff. I'd trust him tuning any day as I just had my sti tuned by him.
