Default Advice: 235/45/17 or 245/45/17 on '05 STi

I am trying to decide if I either keep the same 225/45/17 size on my '05 STi or move up to 235/45/17 or even 245/45/17. Do you see any problems arising from the wider tires? I'm keeping the OEM BBS wheels.

So, are 235/45/17 and 245/45/17 both o.k. in terms of rubbing and the speedo on an '05 STi?

245/45 is a pretty tall tire, I thinks. I thought most guys were going 235/40 instead of 235/45 too.

Since you have 17x8 wheels, you could get away w/ 235/40 or 245/40.

OK, so let me get this right: can I fit 235/45/17, or I need to go down to 40 as in 235/40/17? I would like to keep the same profile (45), but just make the tire wider.

by going from a 225/45 to a 245/40 you would be keeping almost the exact same sidewall height which I think is what you are looking for. It's a ratio to the tire width not a straight measurement.

....d00d...here it is ........the STi really should have a 235/45 from the factory....there has been some proof(GPS) that the speedo reads 'off' by just about exactly the difference between a 225/45 and a 235/45.....SOOOOOooooooooo.....the STi, with it's gearing and power can use a taller tire to achieve a bit 'better' bearing.....and just the opposite is true for a WRX....which can benefit(IMO) from a 'shorter tire"

Thanks Scotty for the info. I feel I will get the 235/45/17 to be a bit taller but wider too. I also feel the STi should've come with 235 instead.

As near as I can tell the JDM STi came with 235/45/17, which makes me think that Subaru still had a pile of 225/45/17 tires to get rid of so they equipped them USDM.

Would a 245/40/17 fall in between the 225/45/17 and 235/45/17 ?

I run a 245/45-17 on my SSR comps (17x8.5 48 offset) and they do not rub. I ran the same tires on my factory '05 BBS wheels and they did not rub. The taller tire gives me a smoother ride and looks a ton better as it fills the wheel well up better.

Would the 245/40/17 rub with pinks (1/2" drop) on an 05 STi?

Depends on the rims as well though. My friend has 255 40 17 Azenis 615's on Rota Torques and they rubbed the fender in th rear.

Resurrecting this thread...

AtomicRacer, What tires are you running in 245/45-17? You wouldn't happen to have the specs? Width, diameter, etc? I am thinking of trying the Nitto NT-01's for track tires and I wanted 245/40-17, but they only come in 245/45-17.

^^ To bother atomic racer even more...your 245/45s don't rub without any fender rolling?

edit: duh you have an 05 STI with the super fenders...don't mind me

So is anyone else running 245/45-17 on an '05+ STI? Need to order tires soon and I want to make sure they'll fit.

I have 245/45/17 on the OEM wheels on a 06 STI. No rub and I'm lowered on Cusco Zero 2 R's.

Question

Can anyone post close-up pics of 245/45/17 or even 245/40/18? Greatly appreciated if you can.

Thanks in advance for feedback....
