Lime Rock is fun to drive, and fun to learn, but it's very easy to write off a car there. Though it looks like there's a lot of runoff room, most of it is steeply downhill on always seemingly wet grass to whatever you're going to hit...and because of how fast you're going, the hit is usually pretty hard. Off to check to see if I updated my hot lap thread after driving there last October. EDIT: Yes, I did update it. Kevin is absolutely right! LRP is smooth and flowing and you can get going way faster than you think you are and when something goes wrong, it goes wrong. Messing up coming into big bend *can* be no big deal if you realize that you're too hot before you turn. Just go straight into the runoff area. Worst case, you get stuck waaaaay over there in the gravel. If you start the turn, though, the wet grass can really get you on the outside and if you hang on long enough to get the left hander in site and were a bit too hot exiting big bend, the back end comes around and you slide across the track and down the wet grassy hill into the paddock tires. Or just get into the lake and watch the tow truck drivers stand on the track with the hook for you to wade out to hook up. Up the hill, it's not like staying straight at the crest is important or anything (note the first 350Z I ever saw was at LRP during a COM day and it ended up upside down just after the crest). West Bend catches all Cobra kit cars. It has some magnetic force that pulls fiberglas into it. Down the hill and if your balls hurt and you brake anywhere, you'll go off track on the exit and slide on the grass into the hay bails. Just bury your foot in the gas and nail the back of the car down until you're well past apex there.
If you're just learning.....well.....watch the exit to Big Bend and West Bend. The rest are pretty reasonable as you won't be fast enough yet. I love Lime Rock, by the way. |

The short course, I could hit the break out, with my 02 running the non turbo motor and RA1's, but barely. My opinion is that Ascutney is a tough one to learn compared to the others, so there is a bit of a learning curve. A stock wrx, with decent street tires should be able to beat the break out time on the long course. If you haven't done anything like this before, I think it would be more of a driver experience limitation than a limitation of your car. If you have done some higher speed events, you could hit the break out. Everyone is different though. It is one of those hill were prior experience counts for a lot. If you find yourself close you can take a slower launch, saving your transmission some grief in the process. The break out for the events is set as the statistical average time. So if you hit the break out, you are likely finishing mid pack, which is not too shabby. Last edited by sachilles; 03-15-2013 at 03:38 PM. |

there are elevation changes, just not intentional, and only in braking zones... its actually kind of scary... "yeah at the end of the course, when you brake, go to the left a little or you might get some air..."

Is there a different event you'd suggest for a first time hillclimber? I don't see myself making a habit of them, thought it would be fun to try out since I have a beater car to use this summer. If all I need to do is a slow launch or lift on a couple straights I'm OK with that.

I've been towed at LRP twice, thankfully both were mechanicals. I haven't run there the past few years but plan to get back there sometime this year. |
