Default Is there a local who would be willing to spend a lil time and teach me how to weld?

I never got the chance to learn to weld back in high school and my immediate family is pretty domestic in-terms of basic mechanical tasks. I have done some reading on the subject, seen some shows on tv about it but never tried.
If someone has the equipment and can show me how its done, I'll buy food/ beer and replace whatever is used.
I have a few small domestic projects in the near future that involve some welding, so learning this skill would be fairly worthwhile. I just wanna try it out before I start buying stuff
Let me know, it doesn't need to be NOW but in the near future. If you can do it during the cold, thats great. It can also wait till it starts to warm up there is no huge rush. Figured I would throw it out to the forum before I look for a welding night/weekend class.

A lot of times you can sign up for a class at a local college and its pretty cheap. I've thought of doing this to suppliment the learning I'm doing at work - I can now weld stuff together crappily using wire and heliarc.

I don't have a metal crack pipe user, I am strictly a glass pipe snob. damit!

No I wasn't around when CDW was here, anyways, I found a class at my old highschool ~ 100 bucks for 3 days of instruction. Not too bad. But if anyone else wants to offer to help please let me know. And if you need a few bucks in a kick back...i'm fine with that too.

I could teach you the basics of TIG/ARC/MIG in 5 minutes. I guarantee you it'll take you years to master even the most rudamentary skills though.

Start with ARC if you can. Just learning to properly strike an arc and keep it going is a lesson in and of itself.

I've been welding since 5, and I still suck at ARC.

Welding is about 5% basic knowledge, and 95% practice. Since so much of it is practice I recommend picking up a cheap welder or even renting one for a weekend and getting a bunch of scraps of metal and letting her rip.

Mig (wire feed) is probly the easiest to start with. Great for quick welds and fairly easy to use. You can find 110v units for $200-300 that will last for years. This is the perfect size for doing exhaust and most other simple welds like light brackets.

Yeah, this is basically why I was wondering if someone wouldn't mind if I took over their garage or what not for a day. So I can see if its worth the investment and time.

Thanks for the input guys. I am willing to pay for your time if thats a concern. I know teaching/ letting someone else use your equipment isn't always something someone wants to do.
