Any editing software programs that are free arent worth it.

At minimum get Lightroom. You can do a lot with it.

I am locked down to COP but we have to use it at the studio for some phase one digital backs and the new +65 phase one back we picked up which files are giant so it handles them.

Just go what with what you can afford for now.

Borrowed my Dad's lens to see what kind of fixed prime lens I want to get. I think the 85mm is good for portraits but its a bit too much for what I am looking at. Probably a 45mm would be perfect... Also shot with his camera so the focus was a bit different than what I was hoping for one some of the shots. Anyway, here are the decent ones:

Thanks! I haven't too much but I like having the JDM badges on there I may do the grill though so it doesn't have the weird two tone look to it. I not a fan how the grill has charcoal grey sort of on the sides and lower piece but Then has a floss black on the upper part...

Would you mind explaining this set up. I would love to try this at some point. I know you burn steel wool but what do you spin it with? Do you also do some light painting as well during the exposure or is there enough light from the wool?

You do light painting as well. I do a 30 second exposure just in case. But you can put the wool in a wisk (used for cooking) and stuff the wool in that. Attach a keychain or something with some length so that you can swing it around without catching yourself on fire. Wear a hood if you can.

Thanks! My tripod is coming tomorrow. I have absolutely no experience with long exposure stuff. I can't wait to play around with it though.

Yeah just make sure you try to expand the steel wool. It burns better that way.

Yeah I noticed. I buy a couple 12 packs from the dollar store and I pull the wool loose so that it is twice it's length, then I fold it in half and put it in the wisk and go to town.

Word of advice to anyone doing this; don't do this on a windy day unless you have a 9 volt battery. If you are lighting it with a lighter, all you are going to do is get flustered because it won't want to light in time. That's when the 9-volt comes in handy. Just rub the sucker across the wool and you're good to go.

Yeah I usually only do 10-15 seconds to reduce noise. I made a little basket and I have a piece of wire on it to swing it around with. You really don't need a lot of wool though, to help from wasting too much on each picture. If it's loose, it'll burn faster, if it's packed it will take a little longer. But in some of those I did a small amount of light painting on the car to illuminate the front bumper

The noise I see I clean up with Lightroom but some noise is just too much to try to extinguish. I guess I never really thought about it, but you don't have to allow for a long enough exposure to get the whole burning process. It would also cut back on too many of the circular trails as well so it doesn't look "overdone". I guess you learn something new every day.

I am curious as to why you are having so much of an issue with noise. My LP exposures typically run about 3-5 minutes and I don't really have problematic issues with noise until I get up beyond that. And I am definitely not using an expensive, fancy camera. LR usually does a good job of reducing most of the noise and I just go through at the end of editing and pick out a few of the remaining dots.

Also, as an alternative to the whisk, I clip my steel wool wads into metal clips from the office supply store which are attached to a length of chain about 18 in long that is basically like an unwound chain collar for a dog, only it has the key ring loop ends instead of the solid metal rings on the dog collar. I wear a big black hoodie that I keep around mostly for the purpose of wearing while I spin the wool - you'll get burned by the wool eventually, this just reduces the times. If it is windy out, I just crouch down with my back to the wind and shield the wool a bit. It'll catch.

Did some light painting last night. Setup my composition and got a flashlight (diffused with a piece of paper) and an iPhone flash.
