I believe it's just a cheaper compound of plastics... I had a 2009 that scrapped a couple times, no horizontal impacts, and broke right on that dumb empty hole just like Knighthawk above, but worse than that some jerk ran a stop sign and totalled it. So I bought a 2011 in November! Well, same deal with the scrapes on the bottom, but no cracks from that. I even hit a high spot in a muddy parking lot at something close to a 45° angle of attack. That bent it out so bad the clips popped like the pics PlayUltimate2 posted. I just smacked it back in place and drove off... It's been 30 or less degrees here so I'll be sure to check for these nefarious cracks going around this season...

Cheapest option is get the bumper replacement, which will be unpainted, for around $200. Then get a shop to paint match it for the best price you can find, or buy the paint from Subaru if you have you're own sprayer and know how to stage paint a car part and clear coat it. Whatever you do, don't fix it until the Winter is over! lol.

anyone know if there's a such thing as a polyurethane bumper for the 2011? i would definitely pay a few extra for a poly than a plastic. the one on my accord is poly and it's in great shape for the abuse from the road.

My car 2010 Legacy GT limited 6k miles.
Should we call SOA?
I guess it happen to a lot of Subaru owners.

I already posted this in the "2011 Imprezas and Beyond!" thread, but thought it more appropriate to place here.

I agree with Landin2010: AWD really doesn't make you a better driver! Seriously, though, it just happens, even to the best of us.

Still, these bumpers seem to be brittle as heck, despite abuse in -10+ weather. My Forester bumper fell off several times on my friend's steep driveway, but never cracked. The bumper on my 2011 seems kinda wimpy in comparison.

Don't be surprised if the delivery person who drives it off the transport truck or ship slightly pre cracks the bumper for you.

true but im sure we all got ours in perfect condition. these cracks just happened out of no where. i really think that the little hole along with no support of any sort causes it to crack even under the slightest stress. if you see where i scraped, my accord would've ate that for breakfast...this wrx however decided to play possum and fall over.

Something to note....I'm gonna make sure to look at this before I take delivery of mine when it arrives. If I note it before hand hopefully if it does crack my dealership will cover it should it get worse.

Default Also cracked lower front bumper

I have a 4 month old 2011 WRX Limited 5 door w/SPT Catback exhaust.

I have seen the other quip replies about 'just drive better' or AWD doesn't make you a better driver but I have been driving over 30 years and at slow speeds pushed against snowbanks/ice and never had this much damage.

Will post pictures but I have a crack on lower drivers side that starts about 12 inches from the edge and is about 4 inches from the bottom of the lowest part of bumper. The nice part is the leftmost part of crack goes down and now I have a flapping part of bumper.

The plastic seems very hard (and thin) for a part that would be exposed hence the cracking.

First Subaru and otherwise pretty happy with it. I am a little scared that its that fragile.

Anyhow - I have read other comments and I am guessing the best route for a repair (since mine is hanging down and not just a crack) is replacing the bumper cover? Is there a aftermarket unit that might be a BIT more resilient? or at least more flexible?

Scratch one more bumper, or crack I should say. Probably happened a while ago during the snow but my bumper has a crack almost in the center of the lower lip. The crack starts at the back of the bottom of the lip, extends forward and then goes up the front about an inch. Maybe two inches of crack total. I was wondering if anyone has had success with any sort of sealant/resin/repair puddy of some sort.

I didn't notice it until I washed my car and felt the crack through the rag. It's right in the center, right next to where the plastic guard under the car is bolted to the front bumper lip. Whatever snow bank I hit or ran over probably would have been absorbed until it hit the area next to the bolt that was more rigid and cracked. Overall, it's not terrible and not worth replacing the bumper over.

My idea is to find some sort of ceramic or plastic puddy/repair substance that will keep it back together or reinforce the crack. Then I can put some sort of sealing tape or something on the front and it should be good to go. I'm mostly concerned about using the wrong resin or sealant and eating through the plastic in the back, or the color in the front. I'm not concerned if the color behind the front lip is taken off or covered as it's in an unviewable area. I'm going for structural repair or reinforcement in the back and sealing in the front.

^ This.

I'm planning on attempting the same kind of repair once Spring arrives. Any tips or success/disaster stories would be great.

As much as I wish we could get new bumpers out of it, I doubt that would ever happen. The best one could really hope for is that the issue is addressed in next year's model.

It's my fault for pulling up really close to a snow bank. I was in a parking lot that had recently been plowed with almost no spaces left, so I took a space that was half full of plowed snow and pulled forward so my tail wasn't sticking out. I bumped the snow, but after a quick check of the front, everything looked fine. Didn't notice the crack until washing the car. The case is that the cracks and whatnot doesn't happen by itself. Yes, it's very fragile, especially for a piece of your car called the bumper, but I'll just take it as a lesson learned, repair mine when I do my oil this weekend and be a lot more careful next time.

That concave up above is for the insurance providers, professional body shops...Obviously.

As for the 1 day DIY quick fix;
I do not have the 2011,but have had more than my share of o7 STi driver induced ,front lip contact with pavement to know what [at least temporarily]fixes the lower part where hairline cracks are the subject.
I used 200 grit sand paper over trauma area, then slapped a liberal amount of locktite gel
glue over it,then quickly spread the gel with popsicle stick prior to dry time completion of 60 seconds, used 600,800 grit sand paper to smooth, then masked off surrounding area lightly sprayed laquer primer, then loaded 2 Duplocolor OBP laquer pens contents into a preval spray gun, added thinner, swept over it lightly, then top coated with clear laquer by Duplocolor, waited 8 hours then paint/wet sanded with 2000 grit, then porter cable polished with 3m compound.

time-1 day
supplies-home depot, poor boys paint section.
cost-ommiting buffer it is under 50.00

Got to say I was surprised to find my bumper had also cracked on the drivers side just where it begins to go up.

I've also had my bumper smacked off, first a small crack, and then it turned into the entire corner.

These are incredibly flimsy, no amount of good driving is going to get around poorly designed driveways and neglected pot holes.

Also, my bumper cost about 500, with parts, labor, and paint.

It took me about 1 week to not scrape the bumper again.....in the same F*&^%& place.

It really wasn't that bad though, just a little on the bottom.

Anyone have a good lift suggestion? Spacers? An 1" maybe? Or more?

I have a cracked bumper as well, but it was my own fault. Driving on a narrow back road and had another car come way into my lane, more than half my lane, so I instinctively swerved to avoid him and had a little run in with a snow bank. Should have just let him hit me and total the car.

Live and learn and pay to fix it. Got a replacement bumper cover from my local dealer for $220.00 and paying my friends shop to fix it and add some goodies to the car after I leave for Korea in 2 weeks.

I posted this same question on one of the other WRX forums when I first picked up my car, as I noticed I didn't have a ton of clearance on unplowed roads, and was concerned about the safety of my bumper. (I'm guessing my 16" snow setup caused me to drop a little as well)

Someone suggested coilovers, but that seems like a little extreme. If there are any other ways to raise things up during the winter months, I'd love to hear it!

I hit a 6" x 6" on the highway about 2 weeks ago. Couldn't get around it. I have a nice crack, too. $1200.00 at my preferred body shop even with my discount.

I fear for my car! I took it threw a good 2 feet of fresh powder! Sure its soft and fluffy but it amounted some weight. I'm checking when I get off work first thing!
