This was a huge benefit at a lot of tracks where you can only see a small part of the action (Monaco).
Well, poop.

So they're going to pull an HRT? Or will they actually qualify for the first race?

Correct...but for the three years they were in F1, they didn't attend a single preseason test, and they didn't successfully qualify for the first race the last two years. If Marussia doesn't introduce their car until the eve of the first race, they're heading down the same path HRT did...

A deal for the Turkish Grand Prix to return to the 2013 Formula One calendar has fallen through, according to a report.

The FIA amended the 2013 calendar in order to open up a space for another European race in July, with Turkey the favourite to fill the slot. The race organisers were confident of securing the necessary funding from the government despite comments from the sports minister saying it wouldn't contribute towards the race fee.

However, the Turkish newspaper Hürriyet Daily News is now reporting that Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdo***287;an has decided against granting state funding, leading the deal to fall through.

Bernie Ecclestone has previously stated that he was only talking to Turkey about the race slot, and as a result the 2013 calendar looks set to remain at 19 races this season.

Hate to say it, but good for them. Using taxpayer money just to be able to pay for the privilege of taking a loss on Bernie's circus is ridiculous and F1 should really look at the direction it's heading. The current strategy seems to be:

Get a country all riled up about the prospect of hosting a global F1 race
Politicians see $$$. Build it and they will come
Brand new purpose built F1 track built
Host a few races, hype dies down, costs add up
Can't afford it anymore. Plea with Bernie and government
F1 pulls out and moves on to the next expansion country to do it all over again
Rinse, repeat

How many of the races introduced in the last decade will be there in the next decade? I'm not opposed to new races and not all races are irreplaceable, but this current strategy, while profitable for FOM (which is probably all that matters), seems to do nothing actually expected by the race hosts. Heck, how many new countries have their names in the mix to host a race in the next 5 years? Russia, Mexico, Venezuela, New Jersey and more I'm sure. Are those going to replace Monaco or another recent expansion track, with them to meet the same fate in a few years?

Mercedes reveals 2014 Formula 1 engine
By Jonathan Noble Friday, January 11th 2013, 14:44 GMT

Mercedes 2014 engine

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the first images of the 2014 Formula 1 power unit that it believes will put the 'motor back in motorsport'.

As dyno testing of its new V6 1.6-litre turbo charged unit continues at its Brixworth facility, Mercedes says early indications from its work are pointing towards an exciting era for grand prix racing once the 2014 rules come into force.

Andy Cowell, managing director of Mercedes-Benz High Performance Engines, dismissed fears that the new power units would not deliver as exciting a sound as the current V8 engines, and predicted thrills for fans and challenges for drivers.

"The engines are going to be loud, but I think sweet sounding," he said on Friday. "The frequency will be higher and, with the turbocharger running at 125,000rpm, they will be loud. When you are stood next to it on the dyno it is not quiet and you need ear defenders.

"There will be a new quality to the racing too. It will edge towards a thinking drivers' formula to get the most from the car and the available fuel energy.

"The engines will also deliver much more torque - especially on the exit of the corners. Cars with more power than grip coming out of the corners - that is something that we all enjoy.

Andy Cowell"They will also put F1 back at the cutting edge of new technology - which is what the fans want."

Red Bull chief technical officer Adrian Newey suggested last year that the power units would become the critical factor in deciding the outcome of the 2014 championship.

Cowell believed it was too early to be specific about the impact the engines will have, but was confident that the importance of the engine manufacturer would be greater than it was now, a move he welcomed.

"We are putting the motor back in motorsport, but to what extent we will only know in 2014," he said. "It will definitely have more of an influence."

The new power units will produce the same 750hp figure of the current engines but a larger percentage of that will come from Energy Recovery Systems.

The current KERS currently produces 80hp for 6.7 seconds per lap, while the new ERS will deliver 161 hp for 33.3 seconds per lap.

Cowell said: "Today it is difficult to be quick without KERS - for 2014 it will be impossible to go racing without ERS."

They can adjust throttle maps in practice (not by the driver), but once in parc ferme, it can't be adjusted. Also, they have to be within a certain percentage of a "baseline" throttle map or it could be used similar to traction control. To the best of my knowledge driver cannot adjust the throttle maps at any point as it would be a form of traction control essentially.

Renaultsport F1 has revealed its 2014 Formula 1 power unit. The 1.6 litre V6 has already undergone extensive testing at the firms factory in Paris and the results are promising.

"The project plan was initially constructed for a 2013 arrival date, and so the kick-off point was formally way back in September 2010***8243; explains Rob White, Renault Sport F1***8242;s Deputy Managing Director, "We have now been running development engines of various types since the latter part of last year. First of all we had single cylinder engines running. There are some extremely significant bits of learning needed in order to be ready.

"We also had a multi-cylinder engine for the previous architecture that was running and has run more recently. We have now run a V6 and the programme is more or less in line with our planning. We've got new learning to do: everything to do with direct injection, everything to do with turbocharging in these new conditions, a substantially bigger energy recovery system design."
