Rumor Ford Maverick Revival

A pair of recently published trademark applications from Ford point to the Blue Oval considering the Maverick and Timberline names for future vehicles. Since the Blue Oval is largely abandoning the car market except for the Mustang and a version of the Focus, these titles are more likely for future trucks and SUVs.

According to the documents from the United States Patent and Trademark Office, Ford has been working to reserve the Maverick name since December 15, 2016, when the company filed the initial paperwork. The company had to go through a complicated process of proving why it deserved to own the name, and the USPTO finally published the application on April 17, 2018. Other companies have 30 days from that date to file an opposition before Ford finally gets the rights to the moniker.

Ford originally introduced the Maverick in the U.S. in 1970 as a compact model to replace the Falcon. It sat a step above the Pinto in the firm's lineup. In the 2000s, the company also rebadged the Escape as the Maverick in some markets outside the U.S.

Given its history of supporting smaller vehicles, the Maverick name would be perfect for Ford's upcoming compact SUV (teased above). Details about it remain scant, but Ford describes the vehicle as “designed to win a growing number of people who love getting away and spending time outdoors with their families and friends.”

The Timberline name could take much longer to arrive on the road, if it ever does. Ford filed for the moniker on January 11, 2018, and the USPTO initially refused the application because of possible confusion with other trademarks.

Ford can appeal the USPTO's decision, but the long process for getting the Maverick name back shows that it could be years before we see a Ford Timberline in showrooms. Even if the model does go on sale, there could be confusion with the similarly named Honda Ridgeline.

The past month has been a whirlwind of speculation surrounding a new, small Ford pickup. We have been apprehensively referring to the vehicle as the Ford Courier, but a leak from The Fast Lane Car now indicates the vehicle will be called the Ford Maverick. And you know what? That makes perfect sense.

Back in January, before we had seen the Bronco and Bronco Sport leak, we reported on a Ford trademark filed for the “Maverick” name. We believed it would be applied to the so-called “baby Bronco,” but that fizzled out, as it’s now confirmed to be called the Bronco Sport. Still, the Maverick name was in Ford’s pocket.

According to an anonymous inside tipster who sent images to TFLcar, we now have images of a supposed tailgate for a Ford pickup that has the Maverick name stamped on it. Since the trademark for was filed as a standalone name (not attached to Ranger or F-150), there’s a very good chance that Maverick will be this rumored small pickup.

Ford Maverick is expected to share a platform, and possibly design cues, with the upcoming Bronco Sport. This means Ford’s smallest truck will be unibody, unlike the larger Ranger and F-150.

Further validating the rumors and leaks of a small Ford Maverick pickup are spy shots of this model. Under the heavy camouflage, it almost looks like the grille is similar to that of the Bronco Sport, indicating the similarities between these two models.

As of now, it’s safe to say a new, small Ford pickup is imminent. Ford will seek to be first to the U.S. market with this vehicle, but competition is still on the way. FCA recently revealed the Fiat Strada small unibody pickup for the South American market. There is a strong chance this vehicle will come to Mexico as the Ram 700. With the Ford Maverick on the way, Ram has an easy way to bring competition to this emerging segment. Hyundai is also said to be working on a small pickup based on the Santa Cruz Concept from a few years ago. We’ll have to wait and see if U.S. buyers have the taste for small, unibody trucks.

Ford has started building its new ‘C-Pick Up’ at its factory in Hermosillo, Mexico last month. The new model is believed to be the new 2022 Maverick, which will slot under the Ranger in Ford’s truck lineup.

Ford shared the news with investors in the company’s monthly production data, which revealed that 21 examples of a new ‘C-Pick Up’ were produced at the Mexican factory, according to CNBC. In all likelihood, these 21 examples are pre-production models for testing.

A photo showing a 2022 Maverick on the production line was leaked back in early January, giving us a pretty good look at what Ford’s baby truck will look like.

The 2022 Maverick is expected to be based on Ford’s C2 platform, which is also used by models like the Escape and the Bronco Sport. Ford’s new compact pickup truck is going to adopt a distinctive front end with C-shaped headlights and a large grille.

The new compact pickup truck is expected to go on sale in both the U.S. and other regions, including Central and SouthAmerica. The new Maverick is expected to be offered with at least two powertrains, including the 1.5-liter and 2.0-liter EcoBoost units. Base models should come with front-wheel-drive, with all-wheel-drive and an automatic transmission being optional.

The leaked image and previous spy shots show that the new Maverick will be available with a four-door crew cab body. Ford’s baby truck will be more affordable than the mid-size Ranger, which starts from $26,015, with previous reports suggesting a starting price of just under $20,000.

Ford’s CEO Jim Farley said recently that the carmaker is “investing in more affordable versions” of their truck business, adding that we should “expect new nameplates below where we compete today”.

Ugh. If it has to have 4 doors, would rather get a Bronco Sport. Expect the availability/take rate on FWD models to be very low, given the popularity of AWD these days. Love those steelies though.

I don't see the fwd model selling that well in the U.S., maybe for fleets. The Ridgeline dropped the fwd models and made everything AWD. The Bronco Sport is available in AWD only. But there's probably demand in other markets for fwd. If priced right, this could be an affordable sport truck.

For how I use my '99 Ranger, FWD won't be a issue, 98% pavement, 2% gravel. If it's offered with a manual, I'd take a serious look.

Ford Maverick Small Pickup Truck Confirmed: Debuts June 8

After a year or so of concrete evidence, from CAD images, to spy shots, to the truck literally being photographed at its assembly plant in Mexico, the 2022 Ford Maverick small pickup truck is officially confirmed. For now, this is all Ford has to say:

Months of rumors, spy shots and speculation have all led to this moment. It’s true – Ford is adding an all-new compact pickup to the lineup, and it’s called Maverick.

Bringing a rebirth of a classic name and the creation of a new choice for truck customers, the all-new Ford Maverick makes its debut on June 8 with the help of actress Gabrielle Union. She will show-off the all-new truck on her own Instagram and TikTok channels, on Ford’s social channels as well as on Hulu. The Maverick will be Ford’s first vehicle to debut on its new U.S. TikTok channel.

2022 Ford Maverick Details

As MC&T first reported last year, Ford Motor Company planned to reveal a “White Space” vehicle this time in 2021, which had all signs pointing to the Maverick small truck. MC&T also brought to light the trademark filing of the Maverick name, which was first used as a mini muscle car competitor to the Chevrolet Nova decades ago.

The Ford Maverick is expected to meet the Hyundai Santa Cruz in this “white-space” market, which attempts to patch up the massive size gap that has been left behind by the growth of the Ford Ranger, Chevrolet Colorado, Toyota Tacoma, and other small trucks that have came and went. The new Maverick will find itself in the space of the Ford Ranger from the 2000s, in terms of size, but will approach it with a different formula.

The Ford Maverick pickup truck has so far only been photographed in crew cab configuration, likely due to its unibody construction. Unlike the rest of the Ford Trucks family, it’s not a body-on-frame vehicle, nor is it RWD-based, but it is still expected to fill the needs of a lot of commercial fleet owners, as well as urban and suburban truck customers who are simply looking for something small.
The 2020 Ford Maverick pickup is expected to share the C2 platform as the Escape and Bronco Sport models, which are built in the same plant, while also borrowing a bit commercial-grade hardware from the Ford Transit Connect.

Under the hood, the 2022 Ford Maverick is expected to share a similar powertrain to the Ford Bronco Sport, as it’s going to be manufactured in the same facility at the Hermosillo Assembly Plant, which employs 2,870 people. However, since Ford’s messaging is that this is “the truck we weren’t expecting,” we’re bound to be in for a few surprises.

Earlier reports citing Ford dealers have claimed that the Maverick price will start around $20,000, which would make it the most affordable new truck in America. Unless the Hyundai Santa Cruz has something to say about it. Pricing has so far been unconfirmed on Ford’s rival. Which, oddly, isn’t coming from General Motors, or even Stellantis, which sells a similar product in Latin America with the Ram 700 in Mexico, and Fiat Strada in Brazil.

The first video above teases that the the new Ford small truck will likely adopt a similar trim level structure to the Ranger, F-150 and Super Duty, as its depicted in XLT trim. Other versions, perhaps a more off-road-ready version that could compete with the Alpha Motors Wolf, could be called wither Timberline or OTX, based on trademark filings.

More leaked photos emerge as hybrid powertrain confirmed for Ford’s all-new compact ute

As predicted, the all-new Ford Maverick will get a frugal petrol-electric hybrid powertrain as fresh photos of the production model have been leaked – again – ahead of the baby ute’s official unveiling next week.

New photos of the compact pick-up were posted by the Maverick Truck Club forum, revealing the ute’s front, rear and side profile, along with the interior of a top-spec model.

The Maverick’s cabin features tan leather seats and a wide touch-screen infotainment display.

The Ford Maverick FX4 will be the off-road variant
FX4 stickers can also be seen on the orange ute’s flanks, suggesting it will have a certain level of off-road capability, and potentially a locking centre diff and hill descent control.

The latest leak follows the first official teaser video of the 2021 Ford Maverick earlier today, in which a ‘BRID’ badge can be seen on the tailgate that confirms the compact truck will get a hybrid powertrain.

Built on the same C2 platform as the Ford Escape mid-size SUV, the Mexican-built Maverick is expected to offer plug-in and mild-hybrid options based around a 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine – as seen on Escape.

The Maverick cabin has similarities to the Ford Bronco Sport
While the Maverick is not yet locked in for Australia, the hybrid version of the Escape is due here early next year.

Conventional engine types are set to include a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder petrol (182kW/373Nm) and possibly an up-spec 2.3-litre turbo-petrol (236kW/448Nm). Expect a dual-clutch automatic transmission like the Bronco Sport to feature as well.

To be officially unveiled on June 8, the Maverick has a Bronco-inspired design with butch and blocky proportions, making it appear like a larger vehicle.
However, it is smaller than the current Ford Ranger dual-cab ute (which measures almost 5.4 metres long) and forgoes meaningful towing and load-lugging capabilities for car-like ride and handling qualities.
The Maverick will likely be offered with front- and all-wheel drive layouts and Ford expects to sell more than 100,000 units of the ute annually.
