This Is The World's First-Ever V12 Subaru Impreza STI

Oh, and it's getting a BMW DCT gearbox as it aims for 1,000 hp.

We've seen loads of wild engine swaps over the years, from a BMW M6 getting a massive rotary engine to an Audi RS3-powered Volkswagen Golf R. One of the more common engine swaps sees one fit the 2JZ-GTE from the A80 Toyota Supra to, well, just about anything. That's actually how the story of today's feature began, but even one of the most legendary engines on the planet is not enough for some. For Jonathan Proulx from Canada, fitting his Subaru Impreza STI with the 3.0-liter straight-six was fun at first but eventually got a bit stale. His remedy? A 1GZ-FE V12 from a Toyota Century.


The WRX STI in question is a 2009 model that was the world's first AWD 2JZ with a six-speed manual, and that had the ability to switch from RWD to AWD with "a flick of a switch," reports GT Spirit. Now the car has had its 2JZ ripped out so that the 5.0-liter naturally aspirated V12 can be fitted. Naturally, this isn't a performance upgrade from a 2JZ in stock form, so Proulx will be taking the massive motor way beyond its stock rating of 308 horsepower to "a minimum of 1,000 hp". To get there, a pair of G30-770 turbochargers will be added to the big engine, which now features forged connecting rods, pistons, and valve springs. Also included are 1,000-cc Bosch injectors, with a MaxxECU PRO Standalone system managing everything.



As you can imagine with such an insane build, Proulx has some performance goals he aims to achieve beyond just a four-figure horsepower rating. His aim is to be able to retain the air-conditioning system and use it as a daily driver, but with enough capability that the unique Scooby can drive to the strip, set a nine-second quarter-mile time, and head back home with ease. Speaking of making things easy, the seven-speed dual-clutch automatic from an E9X BMW 335i is being fitted too, so achieving 9s and driving home in comfort should be easy as pie. We can't wait to see and hear this thing hit the strip.
