Rumor Ford Maverick Revival

Most people do not tow, anything. And most that do, it's lighter loads. 4000 lbs mean it can tow a open trailer, a PWC, enclosed motorcycle trailer, even a lighter boat. It's all the truck many need. The same facts are why I bought a Ridgeline instead of a full size. Didn't need or want the crap BOF handling, didn't need the capacity, and wanted SH-AWD unibody handling. They say the same crap about my "truck" yet it has more payload capacity than a Raptor.

If it's not a full size BOF truck, well there are going to be those who persistently and consistently whine about its existence.

Has anyone seen the car in person, or driven one of these yet? Better yet has anyone gone from a full size pickup to one of these small trucks? Price seems right, but I'm ultimately concerned the small bed will drive me crazy and constantly limit me.

My Single cab 8' bed part time work truck is getting old, but still running alright. Its time for a 4 door soon so I can put the kids seats in the truck rather than swapping vehicles all the time, but also having a vehicle that my wife can also drive seems to make sense so we can get rid of an extra car. She won't drive the current truck and a 4 door/6' bed is still too big. Used car market is wild right now, so the 4 door Maverick recently popped on my radar and I started considering one.

The price sounds great and I'd like to consider the base $20k model, but that damn tiny bed. While the Maverick can transport a 4x8 sheet, 10' piece of lumber is probably really pushing it and needs a counter weight. I'd definitely have to get some sort of back rack for a ladder/extra vertical storage capacity. I never really tow, but thought I could pickup/rent a trailer if need be, but the tow rating seems pretty low.

I'm so torn.

10' would require buying a rack that has support running over the cab. It's doable but you'll need to invest.

Well you're too late. Ford announced today they were shutting down orders of the Maverick due to overwhelming demand.

I keep thinking Ford hit the nail on the head by killing off the focus in the states and investing in trucks. They obviously found a niche that most manufacturers didn't realize existed, sarcasm. By the time GM and Dodge catch up, Ford will be standing on a pile of cash.

Ford hurry up and give us a hybrid AWD or RWD that makes 35 plus MPG. I wonder if they can offset the AWD with a slightly bigger battery.

There's a wee bit of a supply chain issue going on right now. Ford is typically good at building as many (and sometimes more) than the market desires, but they (and others) are absolutely rationing parts and building a mix of products right now.

Mystery dual exhaust Maverick

We have yet another Ford mystery mule on our hands. This Ford Maverick was spotted on the company's proving grounds sporting an odd combination of camouflage and mix-and-match body elements, leading us to believe that Ford is testing either a new or upgraded powertrain.

Let's start with the exhaust outlets, because they're certainly a departure from what we've seen on production trucks. Rather than a single, under-bed outlet on the driver's side, this prototype appears to have outlets exiting from what are currently rear bumper inserts. Our spy included an old photo of the EcoBoost turbo engine's current single exhaust setup, which we've modified for the purposes of this speculation write-up.

The red circles highlight the inserts where the bushings for the exhaust hangers go. Since the EcoBoost has only one outlet, it would stand to reason that the one on the right (passenger side) in this photo, which doesn't currently have anything inserted, was engineered for that purpose. The current outlet exits just beneath the inserts in the bumper (just out of frame; follow the yellow arrow), which is what appear to have been cut out for this mule:
But wait, there's more. The grille and front fascia have been modified too. Normally, an EcoBoost Maverick has a lower bumper fascia with a grille insert behind which the intercooler lives. That in turn is flanked by tow hook recesses and small fog lamps or inserts. This bumper appears to be from the base (hybrid) model, but there still appears to be some sort of heat exchanger in that center section. Whether that's an intercooler for the turbo, part of the air conditioning system, an oil cooler or just an optical illusion is difficult to say from this distance.

We can see another heat exchanger juuuust peeking out above the lower grille insert, but note that behind it Ford has used its camo tape to cover up the remainder of the opening leading to the engine bay. Taken together with what we noted above, this seems backwards for a high-performance application, which we'd expect to require more cooling, not less. Especially considering this is a pickup truck.
It seems odd that Ford would go to any lengths at all to disguise what are likely unfinished wheel well openings. The wheel design itself being disguised is also strange; Ford could have simply used a wheel from another model of Maverick if they were just going to cover them up.

Is high performance the wrong read here? Is Ford instead working on another hybrid variant? Perhaps a PHEV? The exhaust routing could be necessary to clear a larger under-bed battery pack. So, where does that leave us? Puzzled, for sure, but equally intrigued.

What? Not to be a dick but are you oblivious to what’s going on in the world? First, manufacturing of parts is way behind with supply chain issues. Second, China shut down again because of covid which will further impact supply chain. Inflation costs on raw materials keep rising so a vehicle may cost X now to make but significantly increases and cost Y. If forecasting cost increases is unprecedented, it’s smart to stop taking orders instead of telling customers it increased or selling at a loss.

Also, this isn’t just a vehicle for “poor people.” I have countless coworkers and a few friends who traded in their full size truck and got a maverick. The person with the lowest income (not considering his wife), makes over $100k.

No. You're just oblivious to what I was saying with intentional hyperbole. I'm well aware of the supply train issues in the world. Ford ran out of their allocation of hybrid Mavericks before launch.. and then acted surprised that the most economical truck on the market was in such demand. This is the company that makes 11ty billion King Ranches every year. I'm making fun of them for acting shocked that people would want affordable, frugal vehicles... you know, the very thing that the company built itself on in the first place.

I think it has less to do with them “being shocked by demand” and a hell of a lot more to do with unpredictable material cost rise (metals, etc), manufacturing costs, costs to transport raw materials. The Russian Ukraine war has skyrocketed the cost of materials and that was an unforeseen event. Everyday you can watch the cost of these materials increase.

Everyone got so bent out of ****ing shape when Rivian jacked the price of their vehicles up because material cost skyrocketed yet either don’t know or forgot that when you’re building a new home, wood and steel coats are only guaranteed for like 2 weeks. Builders can increase or decrease the cost of your home build depending on where market prices go. Thinking the auto industry is immune to that fluctuation is a bit crazy.

The current Maverick is no slouch. Part of me wishes they would just drop the old RS drivetrain in this Monster along with the Mustang motor. Totally wishful,but would be amazing fun.

I randomly saw a Maverick on the road the other day. It took me a second to realize why the oncoming truck looked familiar, yet distinct. It's a safe design, but I like it overall.

A 300+ hp AWD Manual compact truck? Would this be a "hot hatch" for a market that apparently doesn't like hatches, sedans, or wagons but obviously rather have trucks?
