High-tech next-gen Outlander shown taking part in final testing ahead of reveal on February 16

Mitsubishi has released a video of the next Mitsubishi Outlander being put through its paces during final shakedown testing ahead of the new-generation mid-size SUV’s launch on February 16.

Set to be heavily inspired by the striking 2019 Engleberg Tourer concept, the fourth-generation Mitsubishi Outlander features the concept’s slim LED headlights, large front air intakes, wraparound-effect windscreen and an imposing take on the brand’s Dynamic Shield front-end.

Following its global debut next month, the new Mitsubishi Outlander will be launched in Australia in the second half of 2021 brandishing a range of high-tech new features, from cabin infotainment through to advanced driver assist safety tech.

It will also carry an updated version of the car-maker’s Super All Wheel Control (S-AWC) all-wheel drive system, which is shown being tested to the limit in the video.

Conventional petrol engines will form the mainstay of the fleet, with potential powerplants including the 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol unit (135kW/245Nm) from the upcoming Nissan X-TRAIL, which would be an improvement on the Outlander’s current 2.4-litre engine (124kW/220Nm).



There’s a chance Australian-spec models could get the Japanese brand’s 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine (110kW/250Nm), while the SUV will also continue to offer a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) powertrain offering at least 50km of EV driving range per charge.

As previously reported, Mitsubishi is developing its PHEV technology on a broad range of fronts – including high-performance variants – but it remains to be seen whether the 2021 Outlander will get a heavily upgraded hybrid system or maintain the current set-up comprising a 2.4-litre petrol engine paired with twin electric motors and a 13.8kWh lithium-ion battery.



Either way, the new ultra-low-emissions powertrain is expected to offer an improved pure-electric range of up to 70km.

Expect more teasers from the car-maker in the coming weeks as Mitsubishi builds up to the Outlander’s February 16 debut.

Latest version of seven-seat SUV unveiled for North American market, but not destined for UK

The new Mitsubishi Outlander SUV has been revealed ahead of its April debut in North America, with the Japanese car maker claiming the fourth-generation car is completely new from the ground up.

This Outlander marks a new chapter for Mitsubishi, which is using the latest version of its flagship vehicle to introduce a fresh design language that will be rolled out across the rest of its line-up.

The ‘Dynamic Shield’ design features a bolder face than that of the previous model, with chrome styling integrated with new, ultra-slim LED headlights.

"Based on the product concept 'I-Fu-Do-Do,' which means authentic and majestic in Japanese, the all-new Outlander has been crafted into a reliable SUV with significantly upgraded styling, road performance and a high-quality feel to satisfy the needs of customers who want to expand their horizons and take on challenges of every kind," said Mitsubishi CEO Takao Kato. "With the launch of the all-new Outlander, we will first expand our sales in the North American market and then aim for global growth."

In addition to the styling, Mitsubishi says the new car is “the best-equipped, most thoughtfully engineered vehicle the company has ever developed”.

The new Outlander uses a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine, with top-spec models boasting four-wheel drive. Six different driving modes are offered to give drivers the best possible performance in all conditions. Even two-wheel-drive models get five driving modes.

The Outlander has seven seats as standard, as well as 18in wheels, USB-A and USB-C charging sockets and 11 airbags throughout the vehicle.

Available equipment includes a 12.3in digital instrument display and a 9.0in infotainment screen. This offers Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity, with wireless device charging included.

Among the other options are 20in wheels, semi-aniline leather seats, Mitsubishi’s driver assistance system with adaptive cruise control and lane-keep assistance, navigation integrating what3words technology, a 10-speaker Bose audio system and a 10.8in head-up display.

Prices start from $25,795 (about £18,600) in North America, with the car set to reach other markets at a later date. However, that won’t include Europe because Mitsubishi has frozen imports into the continent in order to cut costs.

That’s in spite of the previous-generation Outlander being one of the most popular plug-in hybrid vehicles on sale, selling in its thousands even in the face of increased competition from newer electrified models.

Only thing I see attractive is interior. Mitsubishi used to be an AWD/4WD powerhouse. 186HP 2.5L 4Cylinder motor and CVT transmission lifted from the Rogue, as is the body. Essentially a rebadged Nissan. Such a shame.

It's not like the previous/current Outlander was a powerhouse either. Being a Nissan Rogue sibling is really their only saving grace. It's nice it offers a 7seat configuration but being only a n/a 4 cylinder, I can't imagine it being a mover.

Hopefully the PHEV version receives a battery EV range upgrade.

Good god that front end is a disaster. It looks like they stacked two different front ends on top of each other and called it a day. The interior actually looks really nice for the segment but that front end is so bad.

2023 Mitsubishi Outlander Plug-In Hybrid Comes To America, Will Go On Sale Later This Year


Mitsubishi has unveiled the 2023 Outlander Plug-In Hybrid, ahead of its U.S. debut at the Twin Cities Auto Show later this week.

While it’s odd that an automaker would introduce an all-new model at an auto show in Minnesota, Mitsubishi noted it’s a bit of fan service as the Saint Paul area has become the “top-selling Outlander PHEV market in the country.”
Putting that aside, the 2023 Outlander PHEV is billed as the company’s new flagship as the crossover will become the “most advanced and best equipped vehicle we have ever sold.”

The company is keeping U.S. specifications under wraps, but said the crossover will have a new twin-motor 4WD PHEV system that features more powerful front and rear electric motors. Mitsubishi also revealed the 2023 Outlander PHEV has a larger battery pack, seven drive modes, seven seats, and a bigger gas tank that helps to increase its overall range.

That isn’t much to go on, but the Japanese model has a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 131 hp (98 kW / 133 PS) and 144 lb-ft (195 Nm) of torque. It’s joined by two electric motors and a 20 kWh battery pack, which enables the crossover to have an electric-only range of 87 km (54 miles).
We’ll likely learn more about the US-spec model shortly, but Mitsubishi noted it will go on sale in the second half of 2022. When it does, it will follow in the footsteps of the standard Outlander and likely come equipped with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 9-inch infotainment system. Pricing remains unconfirmed, but we wouldn’t be surprised if it costs more than the outgoing model that began at $36,995.
