My FIL just picked up a Ridgeline, perfect truck for him as he is on the taller side (~6'5") so these smaller trucks won't work for him, and he didn't want a half ton because it was overkill for his uses. He is coming from a Frontier, so the move from BOF is something he really appreciates; better ride, more spacious cabin.

I'm torn; what I'd really like is something the size of a Ridgeline with the upcoming "Lightning" EV AWD drivetrain & batteries. The Lightning is far better suited to "Truck" guys than the Ridgeline is, but I think if "truck guys" gave something like a Ridgeline a fair shake they might prefer it; at least the Lightning will have IRS, so there is that. The Lightning though is way more truck than I need.
I'm tempted by these small trucks/utes; really speaks to the minimalist part of my brain, but in honesty the bed may be too small, and the ground clearance not enough. Payload seems okay (1,550lbs) but towing is rumored to be pretty low (2,000lbs). I'm also not a fan of DCTs being used, as neither manufacturer has a great track record with them; I can't think of a world where planetary auto wouldn't foot the bill (DCT has a miniscule fuel economy gain in testing perhaps?).

It appears we're in for a strange couple-few years with regards to pickups.

Nah, this is a bit smaller and crossover based. This provides the small pickup utility that the market wants without competing as closely with the F150 as the Ranger does.

Conceptually, I think Ford has a winner here. There are plenty of people that want a pickup truck, but don't want the compromises of a full size or mid size truck. We'll see how well they execute.

Gabrielle Union is an interesting choice to use as a spokesperson.

I bet it will do really well. They managed to get the looks in line with the ranger, but didnt seem to overdo it from what i can see so far. I bet it given the ridgeline and the hyundai some true competition. Competition brings good things with it.

The Ranger style treatment or design language or what not gives it more stage presence i think. Rear 3/4 looks just like a ranger. Whatever it is, I think the looks work well.

Some numbers, I like numbers

Max. Towing Capacity--------(pounds)-----Payload(lbs)----Bed length
2022 Ford Maverick------------4,000----------1,500----------4'-5"
2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz-----5,000----------1,700----------4'-4"
2022 Ranger-------------------7,500----------1,560----------5'-1"
2021 Honda Ridgeline --------5,000----------1,583----------5'-4"

Obviously bed volume will be greater in the mid-sized trucks (Ranger & Ridgeline) but length gives you an idea of what you can put in there and hints at volumetric capacity (think mulch, stone, etc.).

Santa Cruz looks like the better option on paper compared to the Maverick, 1,000lbs more towing and 200lbs more payload goes a long way for a homeowner, could be the difference between one trip or two to the local box store.
Towing examples:
If you own a Miata you track, 5,000lbs of towing will get you comfortably to the track considering car & trailer weight, tools, fuel & extra wheels, tires etc.
If you own a ski-boat, they tend to weigh in around 3,000-3,500lbs, that plus trailer puts you at the upper end of the towing capacity (near or even over 5,000lbs depending on which boat). A fishing/bass boat though, and you'd be good even with the Maverick.
Small camper trailers come in around 3,000+ dry/empty.

Of course I'd spec them out and see what the price comes to - whenever I spec out a new Ridgeline or Tacoma it's not that big a leap to go up to a 1/2 ton, I imagine pricing will similarly overlap here between compact & mid-size trucks.
Upcoming lightning is still going to be a thing, but will come in at (least) double what one of these compacts will sticker for comparably equipped.

I think the Maverick looks good, what I've seen of the Santa Cruz looks good too; more options in the market is never a bad thing.

What is interesting too is price. Maverick starts at $20k, Santa Cruz (estimated to start at $25k, MSRP not released yet), Ridgeline ($36k). I don't know if this staggering benefits the segments but gives plenty of options. The big seller of the Maverick to the general public will be the standard hybrid and low starting price to be used as a DD basic vehicle. It's going to be the cheapest hybrid on the market. Santa Cruz definitely bridges the gap being cheaper yet smaller than the Ridgeline.

I prefer the Maverick do to size alone. With that being said. AWD with an in between motor would be nice. Be even better if they upped it with some sort of sasquatch package. The Bronco Sport seems to do decent with its AWD.

Strongly considering between totally refurbishing my 09 Ranger (which was free) or going with an AWD Maverick.

honestly, it seems odd to me that Ford would even bring it here given the chicken tax. Wasn't that always their justification for not bringing the Ranger here? Gotta be a pretty cheap truck if they're able to eat that 25% tax and still sell the base model at 22k.

Well.... Scratch buying this thing off the list. For now, without incentives, you have to spend 25K (bottom trim steel wheels and cloth cheap interior) to get AWD with the turbo motor. Sheesh, 3,3k Just for AWD plus 1.5K for the mandatory Turbo motor.

I have no desire to drive a truck without power on the Rear end.

I feel like the packaging is pretty good. I just decked out a Lariat with turbo and AWD and it just hit $36k. I'm sure eventually there will be discounts and incentives, so picking up an AWD + turbo version could be very affordable.

What's the cheapest AWD + turbo truck? Everything seems to be upper $20k to start.

People prefer real pickup truck. Less interested in car-truck.
My guess is Santa Cruz will be gone after 3 years of production.

Trucks built in Canada or Mexico are exempt from the Chicken Tax under NAFTA. Toyota is going to move all production of the Tacoma to Mexico this year.

Perspective of a Swedish transplant. He notes that the F-150 is huge in size and doesn't make sense in Europe, but the Maverick could sell very well. Plus the simple, straightforward design has European sensibility.

It has towing capability, so one could get a trailer if they needed to haul something significant.

For my money, I'm buying a Ridgeline over a Maverick.

Maverick as configured is 37k (Lariat, 2.0T, AWD, 4k tow package, FX4, faux-leather), Ridgeline comparably configured (RTL) is 40k with more of everything. Per usual, Ford makes you check a bunch of boxes you don't want to get the stuff you do want, which really jacked up the price. Just for S&G's a 4dr F150 is about 59k (Lariat, 5.0, bunch of other s*** I don't want packaged with stuff I do want).
Will Configure a Santa Cruz when that comes online, Probably landing in limited territory though, just because I don't want cloth seats that will get destroyed by my offspring (and my wife).
