New 2021 VW Golf R Mk8 Teased Before November 4 Debut

The 2021 VW Golf R has been teased prior to its official unveiling on November 4.

This clip was recently shared on Twitter by racing driver Tanner Foust, and while it actually shows more of the T-Roc R than it does of the Mk8 Golf R, it does open up with a darkened image of the new hot hatch, previewing its headlights and LED light bar that are just like those of the new GTI and other Mk8 Golf models.

While this teaser doesn't really offer us a look at the exterior design of the new Golf R, our spy photographers have previously snapped it during testing and without any camouflage, so we already know what it will look like.

Compared to the GTI, the R has a distinctive front fascia with a unique front grille and large air intakes. As for the rear, it sports an aggressive spoiler sprouting out from the roof, a sharp diffuser and quad tailpipes.



Like the previous-generation Golf R, the new one will be powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder which will allegedly churn out 328 hp. This engine will be mated to a DSG dual-clutch transmission that sends power to all four wheels.



There's no doubt the new Golf R will be fast. Which is hardly surprising, as it will need to compete against front-wheel drive hot hatches like the Honda Civic Type R and Renault Megane R.S. Trophy, as well as all-wheel drive rivals like the Mercedes-AMG A35, while also differentiating itself from the Golf GTI.

Still interested to see what these will look like without camouflage. There's still a lot of vinyl and other crap to hide the final bumper designs.

The new S3 has 306 HP. Doubting this has more than that.

Statements from VOA said that we'd still see a manual - curious to see if that stays true.

Rumors are that these are getting a new awd system that can send more power to the rear wheels than previously. Interested to see if VW has anything to say about this, I haven't seen any info about the already shown S3 having this capability.

That rear wing looks out of place too.. everything on the car is fairly angular and yet the wing has a rounded look. Why..

At least it came back with real side sills (rockers) for the car again. Mk7.5 had those ugly side diffusers taken off a GTI.

I'm assuming they will still be using the EA888. That is a very strong & reliable motor. I know they can make a lot of power with just a tune. My MK7 R was stage 2 and VERY quick. I'm wondering when they are going to use a new motor....maybe the 5 pot?

Word was Audi nixed the use of their five cylinder engine, so I'd say "when" is "never."

I agree with you that the spoiler is off. It could be the picture but it looks like it slopes down and then kicks up. It either needs to kick up more like the Clubsport S, or not slope down to begin with.

Again though, I really like the look of this car. I also like the look of the Mark 7.5 R and I'm somewhat regretful of not getting a Spektrum R when they were offering the super long warranty.

S3's look like donkeys. If compact sedan with AT, I'd get the new IS. They look real good.. with V8 taken from RC-F.

The GTI / R has never been an aggressive styling car. If that’s what you’re after, the GTI / R is not and likely will never be a car for you. Sometimes there is beauty in simplicity.

S3 is over priced muff cabbage, in my opinion.

Overpriced, small, lackluster excitement with boring ass interior for people who can just barely make the lease payment but want to say they own an Audi S series car.

The S3 is more of a hair dresser / daddies little rich girl sweet 16 car than an early to mid 2000’s Audi TT.

I’ll take an Audi TT over the flaccid excitement level of the S3.

The comparisons you people make...A new IS with a V8? An s3 is like $48k a RC-F is about $70k. Earlier saw a comparison of an S3 and a TT?? A roadster vs a sedan ***128580;. Then lastly it was a $130k Tesla vs the next gen STi.

The new Golf R will make its world debut on November 4.

After the new VW Golf GTI debuted earlier this year, the countdown for the new Golf R has officially begun. Volkswagen will lift the wraps off the new hardcore hatchback on November 4. To get us excited before the big debut, Tanner Foust shared a video previewing the hot hatch confirming the reveal date. VW has now released the first official teaser image of the new Golf R and shared new details about the potent powertrain.

The teaser image isn't very revealing, showing a close-up of the rear focusing on the car's prominent R logo. While it isn't shown in the teaser, the Golf R will have a larger rear wing, a more aggressive diffuser, and a quad exhaust system to set it apart from the Golf GTI. Unfortunately for VW, the Golf R has already shown in all its glory in leaked images.

Volkswagen claims the new Golf R will be "more powerful, more dynamic, more efficient, more closely integrated, more digital." Power will be provided by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine, which VW claims will make the new Golf R "the most powerful Golf model" yet.

VW hasn't released any technical specifications, but leaked documents suggest the new Golf R will have 328 horsepower on tap. A dual-clutch automatic and six-speed manual transmission will be offered, but we're not expecting the manual to be available in the US, sadly.

The turbocharged engine will also boast new technology such as water-cooled exhaust gas that routes to the turbocharger in the cylinder head and variable valve timing with dual camshaft adjustment.

There will also be a new all-wheel-drive system with selective wheel torque control on the rear axle. This system is controlled by a vehicle dynamics manager integrated with the electronic front differential lock and adaptive chassis control. As a result, VW claims the new Golf R offers "optimum traction characteristics, neutral and precise handling, as well as maximum agility" and "maximum driving pleasure at a previously unrivaled level."

After the Golf R debuts on November 4, presales will start one day later in Germany and Europe. US availability has not been confirmed yet, but we'll hopefully find out more next week.

^ Disappointing but not surprising. Driving a manual car in the U.S. seems like a pretty good anti-theft method sadly manuals will only continue to die here as each younger generation only cares about how cool their cars look and how much tech is in it. Driving engagement? Mehhh, who needs it.

Hey, a Challenger/Charger scat-pack is one and a half times the car that a Golf R is! speaking from a raw materials standpoint that is, they are massive.

I'd still take the V8 fatty smoke and noise machine over the FWD biased AWD yawn mobile. Not that the Golf R isn't potent, it just won't be as much fun for me.

2022 Volkswagen Golf R Arrives With 315 HP And Manual Gearbox

Yes, you'll be able to row your own gears.

It goes without saying that anticipation for the new Volkswagen Golf 8 is high in North America. That is emphasized when talking about the Golf R, the high-performance version of the Golf range that we already knew would be the most powerful Golf yet. We also knew that a manual gearbox may be offered for the range-topping Golf, but until VW confirmed the technical details, we didn't want to get ahead of ourselves.

Well, here it is: the 2022 Volkswagen Golf R, which we can now confirm produces 315 horsepower from its 2.0-liter turbocharged engine. Even better, the Golf R will be offered with a six-speed manual in the US market. An optional seven-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission will be available as well, along with a standard torque vectoring 4Motion all-wheel-drive system.




With 27 hp more than the previous Golf R and 310 lb-ft of torque (up from 295 lb-ft), the latest Golf R can reach 62 mph in only 4.7 seconds and a top speed of 155 mph. That makes it quicker than the Honda Civic Type R, one of our favorite hot hatches. The Golf's newly revised AWD system not only distributes power between the front/rear axles but between each rear wheel, too. Up to 100 percent of torque can be sent to the outside wheel in the bends, which reduces understeer and results in more agile handling.

Also enhancing the high-performance goals of the Golf R is a 0.8-inch lower ride height relative to regular Golfs, while an aluminum subframe has lowered the front suspension's weight by 6.6 pounds. An enhanced braking setup comprises two-piston front calipers made of aluminum, lowering mass by 60 percent on each side. The front discs have grown to 14.1 inches and 1.3 inches wider.


The new Vehicle Dynamics Manager is a driving dynamics control system that manages the electronic differential locks, the 4Motion AWD system, and more to improve cornering prowess. The result of all these changes means that the new Golf R DSG lapped the Nurburgring Nordschleife up to 17 seconds faster than the previous Golf R based on internal tests.

Of course, the Golf's winning formula has always been its ability to both entertain and be perfectly docile and comfortable in day to day use. To that end, Nappa leather sport seats and carbon-look inserts highlight the advanced cabin, which comes with a 10-inch Discover Pro touchscreen, along with a configurable digital instrument panel, which forms part of VW's latest Digital Cockpit.



Further features include a 30-color ambient lighting system, brushed stainless steel pedal caps, and a new 3D-look R-View for the instruments.

Outside, the Golf R sports the latest Golf 8's fresh look with upgrades like a motorsport-style splitter, air intake grilles that are unique to the sportiest Golf, a new front bumper, a blue crossbar on the grille (which lights up as a strip of LEDs), and 19-inch wheels with summer performance tires. Twin tailpipes in chrome and a roof spoiler distinguish the rear view, and three colors will be on offer: Lapiz Blue Metallic, Deep Black Pearl Effect, and Pure White.
Pricing has yet to be announced but the new Golf R will go on sale towards the end of 2021 as a 2022 model.
