Acura MDX Type S, notice how the DOHC Turbo V6 fits in perfectly. Thinking this motor was always designed for the SUV segment, the TLX Type S was just a "throw them enthusiasts a bone."

Similar to what Mazda did with the CX9/CX5 and now Mazda3.

2022 Acura MDX Type S First Look: Putting the S in SUV

The NSX of MDXs? Acura's big SUV gets the 355-HP V-6 from the TLX Type S.

UPDATE 11/5/21: Acura has released new details on the upcoming 2022 MDX Type S, the 355-horsepower sport SUV that we now know will be reaching dealers in December of this year. In addition to the powerful turbocharged V-6 that is exclusive to the Type S, backed up by the brand's excellent Super Handling All-Wheel Drive system, the MDX Type S will get a new air suspension system. That is a first for the brand. It pairs the brands standard Adaptive Damper System with airbags that can provide an additional 2 inches of ground clearance in Lift mode.

In addition to the extra go, the MDX will stop better with larger Brembo four-piston front calipers. At 14.3 inches, they're a half-inch larger than the regular MDX's units. The brake pedal feel has also been adjusted to more closely match that of the NSXone of several ways in which Acura is trying to tie the MDX Type S thematically to the hybrid sports car before it bows out after the 2022 model year.

The interior is trimmed in Milano leather, but the Type S adds a few additional details like a flat-bottomed Type S steering wheel, contrast stitching, metal sport pedals, and so forth.

The 2022 Acura MDX Type S goes on sale this December, and while full pricing hasn't been announced, expect pricing to start in the upper $60,000 range.
Acura's resurrected Type S performance sub-brand makes its way to the luxury marque's MDX three-row SUV. The 2022 Acura MDX Type S trades the standard model's 290-hp 3.5-liter V-6 engine for a 355-hp turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6, a unit that also powers the 2021 Acura TLX Type S.

Equipped with Acura's torque-vectoring all-wheel-drive system (dubbed Super Handling All-Wheel Drive or SH-AWD by the Japanese brand) and a 10-speed automatic transmission, the sportiest iteration of the MDX promises to improve upon the standard model's dynamics, an AWD version of which we clocked accelerating from 0-60 mph in 5.7 seconds. To complement the more powerful engine of the MDX Type S, Acura fits the most potent variant of its mid-size SUV with Brembo-sourced front brakes and a trim-specific Sport+ drive mode.

Despite its sporting pretensions, the MDX Type S maintains the less powerful MDX SH-AWD's 5,000-pound maximum towing capacity. Acura intends to show off the SUV's hauling abilities by having a 2022 MDX Type S tow one of its TLX Type S race cars from Raymond, Ohio to Pikes Peak, Colorado, where the competition-ready sedan is due to take part in the 2021 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.

While Acura's revealed much of what separates the 2022 MDX Type S from its lesser 2022 MDX kin, the brand remains mum on the vehicle's price and feature content. Nevertheless, Acura notes it plans to share more information about the model as the Type S-badged SUV's late 2021 on-sale date draws closer.

Acura is just sending it off without any real test drives before sales start. High 60's to start. So what does that come too people ? 75.. plus ten percent for ahh value added mark up.

I have seen some of the new MDX's on the road. It's not a bargain as it once was. Acura is commanding premium luxury for this thing, design fits the bill the drivetrain leaves a lot to be desired. Cross shopping wise, if I was in the market I'd go with a X5 40i XDrive. B58 in-line 6, ZF transmission and serious brakes to match.

That won't stop people from flocking to dealerships.

Early last month, we received word that the 2022 Acura MDX Type S would carry a base price "in the high-$60,000 range." That's been proven to be absolutely correct. The luxury Japanese automaker has released official 2022 MDX Type S pricing just in time for the holidays. But if you're hoping to receive this premium and sporty SUV as a gift, the gift giver better have some deep pockets.

The base MDX Type carries a starting price of $66,700, not including the $1,045 destination charge. So you're looking at a minimum of $67,745. If you desire the Advanced Package, be prepared to hand over $73,095, including destination.
Regardless of which one you opt for, the MDX Type S, the first time an Acura SUV has received the coveted Type S badge, comes powered by a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 pumping out a healthy 355 horsepower and 354 lb-ft of torque. A fast-shifting 10-speed automatic transmission routes power to the excellent Super Handling All-Wheel Drive system.

Other notable standard features include an air suspension system with adjustable ride height, an adaptive damper system with three profiles, a seven-mode integrated dynamics system, Brembo front brakes with 14.3-inch rotors and red four-piston fixed calipers, and standard 21-inch wheels.

Standard interior amenities include wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Alexa integration, wireless charging, an ELS Studio 3D audio 16-speaker audio system, 12-way power front seats covered in Milano leather, and a flat-bottom steering wheel. Stepping up to the Advanced Package tacks on things like a 25-speaker, 1,000-watts audio system, 16-way power and 9-way massage front seats, heated rear seats, and open-pore wood trim with a cool black metallic finish.

Pricey? Yes, even for the "standard" MDX Type S, but with a standard third row of seats, this Acura SUV is an ideal family hauler for people who love to drive.

At that price range the drivetrain pales a lot in comparison to the B58 and ZF8 which is the gold standard for 6 cylinder/automatic.

Yeah, the X5 is a better buy for similar money. But the 3 row in the MDX is likely better than the new optional third row in the X5, so it depends on how important that third row is.

I'd still rather the X5 because it tows well. Which is a box to check for people shopping this segment. I wouldn't tow a trailer with the MDX. It's probably competent towing, but I wouldn't do it. Like driving the X5 hard and fast. They each have their trade offs.

As far as buying either as fun drivers cars, this has been the sales pitch for SUVs since forever. Still not buying it.

I wouldn't even call my smaller X3MC a fun driver's car. I find the higher you sit up the less you feel connected to the road. Yes it grips like a sporty car but it's just not as engaging. I consider it more of a sharp driving SUV that's really fast.
