Who Makes the Most Reliable New Cars?

The Chevy Trailblazer subcompact crossover is tied for the most reliable new vehicle on sale today, according to Consumer Reports.

The publication recently published an article entitled ‘Who Makes the Most Reliable New Cars?’, which uses its own survey data to determine which new vehicles experience the least number of reliability-related problems.

In a somewhat unexpected turn of events, the Chevy Trailblazer tied with the Lexus GX as the most reliable vehicle on sale today. This is surprising, as the Chevy Trailblazer is a fairly recent addition to the automaker’s lineup, and brand new vehicles often experience some reliability-related teething problems early in their lifecycle. The GX SUV is also one of the longest-running vehicles offered by the ultra-reliable Lexus brand, so the fact that the Trailblazer has proven to be equally as dependable is impressive.

Lexus was also found to be the most reliable vehicle brand in this study, with every single one of the Japanese automaker’s models showing above-average reliability. CR says “Asian automakers are still leading reliability by a wide margin,” with an overall reliability average of 62 out of a possible 100 for the region. European automakers were second, trailing Asian brands by 18 points at 44. While U.S. domestic brands score last with a score of 42 across all vehicles, these companies had stronger reliability for their truck and SUV models.

GM had a strong showing in this study, with the top four most reliable domestic vehicles all being from one of the automaker’s four brands. This includes the Chevy Trailblazer, of course, along with the Buick Envision, Chevy Silverado 2500HD and GMC Sierra 2500HD.

Battery-electric crossover models were the least reliable vehicle type in the study. While EVs are often touted as being more reliable than ICE vehicles, automakers often load these vehicles up with the latest technologies – leading to frequent problems with in-car electronics and power equipment. The most reliable vehicle type was compact hybrid/plug-in hybrids like the Toyota Prius and Honda Insight.
