We're not complaining.

The 2022 Volkswagen Arteon is a highly underrated piece of contemporary design. In fact, we'd go so far as to say it's the best-looking car Volkswagen has ever made. But in the US, we don't get access to all its variants. Fortunately, we recently discovered that the high-performance R variant could soon be arriving on our shores. That's all good and well, but there's another, even more attractive model that we want called the Shooting Brake. We've wanted to see it here since we first caught it through the lenses of our spy photographers, and now it seems that the dream could be coming true.

CarBuzz has uncovered patent documents filed with the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) that show Volkswagen applying to protect the design of the Arteon Shooting Brake, both in R and regular flavors, on domestic shores. This suggests that the wagon variant of the luxury sedan could soon be offered in US dealerships, but we must point out that this is by no means confirmation that the Shooting Brake is destined for America.

The possibility exists that Volkswagen is simply looking to ensure that no other automakers offer a similarly styled wagon in the US, but this sort of thing is rare, so we're inclined to think that VW USA wants to add the more practical offering to the local lineup.

If it does come to America, the Arteon Shooting Brake will have very few competitors. Wagons are a fast dying breed, and although our market has shown interest in high-performance versions like the BMW M3 Touring and Audi RS6 Avant, more everyday wagons are scarce. Add in the luxury Arteon's slightly premium pricing and it could be a hard sell. We asked Volkswagen whether the Arteon Shooting Brake would be coming to the USA and were simply told "No plans for this market."

Of course, automakers have been known to withhold details on new product releases, but for now, it seems that our Volks-wagon fantasies lay in tatters. We hold out hope for a change in outlook someday.

It would really only compete with the V60/90 and could undercut them a little. I really wish it was easier for manufacturers to import and sell a handful of cars they already make rather than produce to the lowest common denominator.

They killed the Golf lineup including the Alltrack. They killed the Passat.

CUVs, cheap sedan, halo sedan, halo hatchbacks, EV the rest. A halo shooting brake could work so long as there is zero expectation it will sell any better than the terrible sales of the sedan.

Sedans are just...terrible.

That's not a shooting brake, that is a wagon. A shooting brake is a 3 door wagon. Like this.

"Shooting brake" always feels like an interesting concept, and good execution, with little-to-no takers.

"Wagon" sounds un-American.

it's definitely not a volume seller. as-is, the arteon is like 4-5k units a year in the US, only in the hundreds in canada.

it's amazing that they sell it here, really. Blows up all of the other trends in the auto industry of offering fewer and fewer products.

This ^^^ is the biggest problem. If you want to bring a wagon, and you want meet any sort of volume objectives or market penetration you can't price yourself out right from the get go. The other problem of course is VW reliability. Two of the biggest reasons why Toyota and Honda are always topping the charts with their offerings. As I recall Toyota has been pondering bringing over the Corolla wagon, yes apples and oranges but most buyers will not opt for a wagon this expensive. That only leaves the upper echelon luxury buyers who buy the RS6 Avant or the AMG wagons. This is also precisely the reason why BMW will not bring the M3 wagon to the U.S. It's way too much money to spend to sell just a few hundred units, if even that.

Arteon sedan doesn't meet any sort of volume objectives and has zero market penetration and is a one trick pony big car with standard FWD for $40k.

VW killed the Passat and Golf but kept their least popular model. They have zero to lose by offering a shooting brake.

The Arteon is objectively better looking that the current Passat. The current Passat looks like a 5-year old Accord.

The luxury 5-door "coupe" has been huge lately (BMW Gran Coupe, Merc letter salad dujour, Audi Sportback, Kia Stinger, etc.) because they offer a lot more practical space in a sporty package. Sporty wagons are making a comeback with the Taycan and Panamera Sport Crosses, the RS6, Mercedes wagons (they still make standard E-Class wagons and the C and E AMG wagons), etc. I think VW has a market for the Arteon R as a cheaper alternative to the big boys. I know it would solidly be on my radar since I am dying for a mid-to-full size sporty AWD wagon.
