My STI has never, ever liked shifting into first if i'm rolling at all. Dead stop only. All 88k miles I've had her, if I'm moving AT ALL, I feather that clutch like crazy and use 2nd. Trying to slip into first while moving feels like I'm gonna break something...

weird, my 2008 STI never had any issues slipping into 1st.

the 2004 WRX, that felt like it didn't even have a synchro on 1st, although chatGPT assures me it did.

the 2015 WRX also didn't like shifting into first, but the BRZ had no issues, and my GRC has no issues with it either.

The 02 5mt in my 93 right now hated slipping into first originally, but with some use and the right fluid combo its going in fine now. The STI and other manuals I've had over the years didn't have issues.

The issue I had with the Type-S wasn't so much the transmission not going into first, but the feel of the shifter seeming like it was in first but wasn't. Add on the rev match going nuts made it a deeply disconcerting and uncomfortable experience.

Did people already trash the transmission on test drives on that car?

I get so used to babying the glass tranny on the WRX I rarely shift into first while moving in any car (and always rev match when I do).

I don't think anyone living in reality expected anything different.

I still clearly remember how you drove my car during the group big road trip 20 years ago

I don't think the trans was damaged. It was just the vauge nuetral to first gear feel combined with the rev match.

The test drive route I did around the Automall is basically 8 right turns, 3 of them have "yield" lanes, and 3 others are stops. Only one of the "yield" lanes was clear enough for me to stay in second, the other stop slights/yield lanes I had to slow to a stop for but be ready to shoot off right away in first, so ya, downshift to first to be ready to go. The rev match went NUTS doing that, but not knowing whether the car was actually in first gear or not magnified the issue.

That's the same pedal dance you do to turn off VSA on the FK8. I'm surprise that the FL5 doesn't need it.

Niello finally called me about the demo car about 3 weeks ago (I'm on their supposed waitlist). Still haven't had a chance to test drive it though.

Yeah I got on the waitlist only to see which car I can get first. No plan to get rid of the GRC.
