I thought I'd add something to the Aux-in discussions, particularly concerning the rectangular CD changer connector on some newer HUs. I saw a Subaru 6disc head unit on eBay while I was looking for cheap Mazda stock HUs and noticed that it had the exact same CD changer connector form factor.
'9?-'01 Mazdas have a CD changer connector with a very, very, very similar pinout. In fact, almost all the pins are the same - except for a few which are labeled as Not Connected on the Subaru.
Miata.net has a pinout. I'd post a link but your forum software won't let me. At any rate, go to Miata.net -> Garage -> Audio -> NB Stereo Interface Descriptions.
For the Mazda, all we have to do is set pin 6 (AUX CONTROL IN) to +5v. The display on the radio says "LINE" and the aux input is the only audio source.
I saw that Subaru claims pin F (pin 6) is not connected, but someone ought to confirm that. Mazda uses that pin because they had a factory optional add-on cassette player for these stereos that needed a simple trigger. The Mazda radios are also built by Matsushiiita/Panasonic, BTW.
It sounds like the line-in is always on for your stereos, so you might just try using the System Mute pin (pin L).
