Question Dumb Newbie Question about dog box gearsets...

Okay, I'm a former Honda guy and tranny problems were never an issue so I didn't learn too much about tranny options.

My question is...after looking through the Tranny Forum, I noticed a lot of talk about the STi 6-speed and dog box gear sets as a replacement for the somewhat weak WRX stock tranny. The STi 6 looks really nice, but expensive.

As for a dog box, I don't know what that is...could someone explain this too me. I'm assuming its a new gear set, but what makes it so special? How much do they cost? Who makes them? Where do I get one?

This is just a question for future reference if I ever decide to replace the stock tranny.

Thanks!

Thumbs up

I'm a former Honda guy myself, and I had the same questions.. Try going to how suff works and type "dog box" in the little search thing.. It kinda' explains a little about everything, that might help.

The short answer: You can either get a couple of the gears replaced (usually 1st &2nd), or get a complete gear box. A dog box has straight cut teeth and not helical so its really noisy and requires double clutching when you shift because you don't have syncros anymore. Maybe not the best suited for daily driving unless you don't mind the noise and you have 300+ hp.

see picture http://www.umsrally.com/Dealer/Holin...8Holinger.html

I wouldnt' worry too much about the stock gearbox, just be nice to it.

you should stick with the stock gearbox unless you're gonna be pushing major hp. the stock one is plenty good for around town, and I haven't heard of any problems with the wrx gearbox, only the rs

Allthough some one now has a full dog box gear set (less sychros) that you DO NOT have to double clutch. I belive they have cut square teethe into the sides of the gears so that they will sync themselves.. I'll try and find the article and post a link.

Either way...unless you plan on bashing the $hit out of your tranny you should be okay with stock.

Default Is it animal abuse to backcut your dogs?

Oh, so you mean a Subaru "dog box" gearset is basically the same as a motorcycle transmission? !

Here are a couple of links:
