Default Toyota to fit 1,000,000 CVT units annually

Translated from an article of "The Nikkan Jidosha Shinbun", 15.06.2006:

Until 2010 more than 1.000.000 units
Domestic CVT car sales; Toyota to equip all cars below 3 litre

Toyota will increase the domestic annual sales of CVT equipped cars to more than 1.000.000 units until 2010. Current sales volume of CVT equipped vehicles is about 300.000 units. Besides the newly equipped new Corolla model the number of models equipped with CVT will increase. The plan for 2006 is to double the number of CVTs to 600.000 units. Toyota uses the CVT as one core technology to realise low consumption and plans in priciple to equip all models with engines below 3 litre.

Toyota's target is not to improve the fuel efficiency only, but together with the shockless smooth performance of CVT also the realisation of an improved shift response and performance. Thus the number of applications with CVT will be increased.
Currently twelve Toyota models, from compact class models like "Vitz" and "Sienta" to medium class like "Premio" and "Alion", including the minivan models "Noah" and "Voxy", are equipped with CVT.

Toyota's target is to improve the environmental friendly technology and will go on with the plan to renew all engines and transmissions until 2010. To widen the lineup of CVT equipped models is one measure. First step in near future is the introduction of CVT to the fully new designed Corolla model, which is the most sold car in Japan. This will improve the sales basis of CVT. As next step the equipment with CVT of more than 50% of all sold vehicles in Japan is targeted by widening the number of CVT applications.
On the other hand, since CVT is not capable enough to transmit the output of engines above 3 litres sufficiently, the improvement of efficiency and performance in this class will be achieved by the introduction of more steps into step ATs.
Nissan, which is using CVT as main technology to reduce fuel consumption, has the target to sell 1.000.000 CVT equipped cars worldwide in the year 2007.
