The sychros for 1'st sure are loud... Going about 15/20 mph, if I FORCE the thing back into first, even before I let out the clutch I can hear the things spinning up to speed and going nuts.

Parts manager at a loacl dealer said it's bad for any Subaru to go into 1st unless at a dead stop.

There goes your synchros screaming. You SHOULDN"T do that. If the transmission doesn't let you go into first by increasing the resistance, there's a reason.

REV match(while clutch is engaged, gear in neutral) will help shifting into the first gear, and after that, it's all about how smoothly you engage your clutch completely.

I hope you don't screw up your synchro and ask for warranty work because if this keeps happening, SOA is going to do something about it. (driver's fault)

I can, I just tried this earlier this week. That is the only time that I have, to my recollection. If I couldn't I would take it to the dealer to look at the synchros.

Just so long as the revs are hight enough, I can slip it into first up to about 25, but i don't recomend it. I try to take it easy on the tranny, from what I hear they are not all that strong on the WRX.

It seems lately that even at a dead stop, unless I double clutch, I'm grinding into 1st. I usually don't go to 1st until under 5mph when coming to a stop, or after I have stopped completely. Do you think my 1st gear synchros are going/gone? Anybody have this problem and have it covered under warranty? I just hit 30k.

Hopefully I'll find out in the next week when I go in to have my CE light reset again most likely due to a "loose gas cap." I know it's off topic but does anybody know about that problem? I've been in twice and have been told the same thing, and now my CE light is on again.

I don't really like downshifting into first gear and avoid it. On the other hand second gear seems too tall for those slower turns through intersections - lag out of the turn.

Generally, I wait till I am at a complete stop, but under the red mist in rallycrosses I have been known to jam it into first. It never grinds, but if I don't rev match it has been known to make loud banging noises at me as the engine and tranny mounts get jerked around.

To sum up:
I can shift into first at 15mph
I have folding rear seats in my Impreza LX coupe
I have a factory trunk light
I have a chance at second or third overall in the season championship if I do really well at the last rallycross.
That doesn't make the wear and tear any easier on the tranny.

You could probally downshift into first when you are doing 60, if you didnt car for the concequences

Cough* REV match...
1st is a nearly useless gear... it's ratio is nearly 2k lower than 2nd... that means when down shifting from second at 2k, you need to be about 4k to get -smoothly- into gear. Yeah you can force it, or double clutch, but rev matching will work. I think most people were just questioning the reason to use first...
