Stupid sleeving question
So the hypercast pistons strike again and now i've toasted my EJ25. one piston is just perforated, but another piston completely disintegrated, bent a rod, and cracked the cylinder wall. can a cracked cylinder be sleeved? i'd rather get good sleeves, larger pistons and better rods than buy a stock short block or pay $2500+ for a short block with pistons only. i've got an in with a engine machinist that will machine the block, put in sleeves, bore it, new pistons and rods and balance the assembly for a good price. can it be done? thanks for the input.

Yes it can be done, when my 2.5 let go (for the second time) the cylinder wall was cracked all the way down. You will need to weld it up then have the sleeve put in and make sure you pressure test it first before assembly. Mine wasnt pressure tested first, motor was reassembled and started to over heat within half an hour of driving cause coolant was mixing with the oil !!
Had to have it stripped down again, re-welded and sleeved. Now all is good |

i would advise against this. i bought a used blown shortblock and there were certain tolerances that were slightly off when i had it rebuilt. a blown block is potentially weaker than a brand new one. for the kind of money involved in a rebuild, i'd just play it safe and buy a new block if i were you.

its my understanding that new sleeves are stronger than the stock cylinder walls, so welding up the crack (which doesn't run the whole way down the cylinder) and resleeving it with better pistons and rods might be my way to go. there's a little surface damage on parts of the crank case below the cylinder, but its only surface scratches and should "buff right out". i don't think the integrity of the block itself has been compromised, just the one cylinder. if it worked for STIV6, then i hope its an option for me. any other feedback, stories, experiences, etc?

well i'm convinced. looks very nice! did you have any surface damage below the cylinders inside the crank case itself? i don't think the surface damage will be a problem, being non moving parts. i'll just have the machinist clean it up a little in there. where did you get the sleeves from? any good recommendations on strong quality sleeves?

No damage below the cylinders thank god, but it did ruin a CP piston.
Well im in Australia mate, so unless you want to send it all the way down here i cant help you on where to go for sleeves...maybe Crawford How bad is the damage on your block compared to what you can see on mine, do you have pics ? |

i've got some crappy camera phone pics, but i'll take some good ones with my digital. looks like the bent rod shaved a little metal off of the crank, so hopefully this can just balanced out. if not, i will have to go with a new short block. finding one decently priced with new pistons and a balanced rotating assembly is a little difficult. if not for the crank, i figured out that i can have new pistons, rods, and sleeves and a full balance done for less than a comperably built short block. darton sleeves aren't very expensive and should suffice. i'll have pics later today hopefully that i can post.
