Default 1999 Forester CEL help

Hey All,
This is for a friend, she has a CEL on in her 1999 Forester....the code is Code # P0440

EVAP Emission Control

System Malfunction

I have no idea what it could be, can someone help? She really can't afford to have it looked at, at least not until we are sure what's causing it.
