2.2 single port -> dual port head swap
realistically for those who have done it- does this make any change in the powerband or efficiency of the motor? more low/high end torque etc? i mean yeah theoretically it should but i would like some info from people around here that know firsthand.
thanks in advance- i hope this thread goes better than my transmission one did

the heads are basically the same as far as flow and power production go, however, the single port ones have a slightly higher chance to keep carbon build-up on the exhaust part of the head. not a big deal though. if your doing this so you can fit EL header or whatnot. if you can, find some EJ18 cams and roller rockers from a JY motor. put the EJ18 cams and roller rockers into the dual port EJ22 heads. gives you about 5 hp according to the butt dyno. its basically a small cam upgrade that is kinda fun. remember, you HAVE to use the EJ18 roller rockers with the EJ18 cams, sometihng to do with the ratio or something.

The single port head has larger valves. This may be one of the reasons as why it puts out as much as 142 HP (in the later models) over the dual ports 130 HP.

Excellent! so it is not worth the swap.
plus i switched over to semi-synthetic 5w30 and the HLA ticking has gone away- maybe there still is a lot of life left in her. Thanks! |

Looking around at the exhaust port on that EJ22, there's plenty of room to ovalize it. If you went really far with the oval, it would mean fabbing up a custom exhaust header, but that's part of the fun!
