Default Back From The Ford Proving Grounds.

After a crazy two days I'm back in Vancouver. My trip to Dearborn was even better than I could have imagined. We had a great dinner at the Henry Ford mansion then a full day at the new Ford testing facility.
The facility has road surfaces of every type imaginable. Grades, banks, high speed, gravel - any condition you could think. Wind tunnels, environmental tests, crash tests, you name it. Tons of various vehicles
driving around being tested - many with body camo and hidden parts.
They were also testing the competition's vehicles.

Here are some crappy pics. I need a new camera and some more skills.

3 500HP Mustang Cobra GT500's. I drove the blue one. These things
are a ****ing beast. Huge burnouts on the starting line. A few
people lost it and spun them out. They handle pretty good too.

Hot laps in the GT's. The two Ford test drivers were trying to out-do each other. It was supposed to be one run each. I did three. Crazy windy course with mounds and some nice banking. We got a bit airborn on some of the rollers. You could feel an instant of weightlessness. The drivers would course correct during the brief moment of lose of grip. They also did some crazy drift and corrections on the big turns. I could have done this all day long.

600 HP, 10 cylinder Shelby Cobra Concept car. My turn wasn't until the end of the day. Driver says: "Are you ready?". Start to pull away and it runs out of gas. End of the day for the Shelby. If I didn't have so many turns in the GT I would have been pissed. Too much other fun to complain.

I work on a TV show called The Electric Playground that covers the world of video games. Ford and Atari teamed up for this event to launch the new Xbox360 game "Test Drive: Unlimited". We interviewed Ford people and Atari people about the game and their relationship. I was there for 24 hours and spent about 22 hours in planes and airports.

Look for a thread entitled "Sometimes I love my job" or something like that.

Ryan, looks like you had fun. I would have loved to be in your shoes.

As for the rear tires on the GT - they don't show up well in the picture, but they are HUGE!!! I had a close-up look at the GT at the last autoshow... 335s, that's how I define MEAT! 33.5 centimeters wide and it looks so much wider.

And this pic:

^^^ That is the most beautiful engine bay I have ever seen. I'm not too keen on a couple of the styling cues on this new Shelby Cobra (headlights look a little wierd, some parts look a little chopped off and it throws the lines off a little) but that engine bay is a work of art. See guys, Ford can do something right from time to time!

Interesting, I work for a company that does payroll for the film industry. It's almost like we're related. Isn't that a scary thought.

Ryeeno you are quite possibly the luckiest person the the world! From all the info thats available, the Ford proving grounds is supposed one of the most advance world class facility available.

Got more pics?

I think we all know that Ford is fully capable of building a wicked car, its just unfortunate that they strive to keep building costs of their cars so low, and that's how things end up getting 'neglected'.. oh well.

I tried to fix the pic.

I have a couple of more pics but they don't really add anything to what's already here. They were a little sensitive about photos in some areas. I'm really bad when it comes to taking pics. I went on vacation this summer for a couple of weeks and came back with 5 photos. My camera is so lame it just makes me mad it use it now.

I might be able to post up some video. Any ideas on the best way to do that?

Last year sometime, I saw one of those GT-R concepts in Port Coquitlam...just sitting on the side of Kingsway Avenue.

Wow.
What an amazing experience.

I know that the Mustang doesn't get a lot of love from the Import and Subie crowd, but they're a blast to drive on the roads, let alone a closed track.

Well done Ryeeno.
Thanks for the pics too.

Glad to hear you had a good time, that looked like fun!

So where are the pics of you puking after the ride in the GT?

And to think while you were there I was stuck here playing the actual video game

I second that. I almost picked up a GT in 2002, but held off. Test drove a Cobra (before the supercharger), and that thing is almost perfect. Great steering, huge torque, smooth revving, big brakes, beautiful wheels. I managed the loose traction in front of the dealership on my way back. The only downsides are interior and finish quality. Everything seemed so crude.

However, with 500HP (and it only goes up from there), I would gladly put up with that! Cobra in 2008 for me, unless I get the STi in 2007.

Coles notes: love for Mustang from this Subie owner!

I've been keeping an eye on the svtperformance.com forums - the GT500s are dynoing ~425-430 rwhp stock, and with just tuning, they have hit 475rwhp. I'd be surprised if a full bolt-on GT500 with a smaller pulley (need to change the snout on the s/c, but it can be done) and a tune didn't put down around 550rwhp. It's just a waiting game now with the aftermarket.
